Thoreau’s vision of autoerotic withdrawal into the wilderness, though, depends on recasting spaces from which Native peoples have been dispossessed as places of non-Native regeneration. As against the turn to “nature,” Herman Melville’s Pierre presents the city as a perversely pleasurable place to escape from inequities of land ownership in the country. Rifkin demonstrates how this account of urban possibility overlooks the fact that the explosive growth of Manhattan in the nineteenth century was possible only because of the extensive and progressive displacement of Iroquois peoples upstate.
Rifkin reveals how these texts’ queer imaginings rely on treating settler notions of place and personhood as self-evident, erasing the advancing expropriation and occupation of Native lands. Further, he investigates the ways that contemporary queer ethics and politics take such ongoing colonial dynamics as an unexamined framework in developing ideas of freedom and justice.

About the Author
Mark Rifkin is associate professor of English and women’s studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is the author of several books, including When Did Indians Become Straight? Kinship, the History of Sexuality, and Native Sovereignty and The Erotics of Sovereignty: Queer Native Writing in the Era of Self-Determination (Minnesota, 2012).

Smart and essential book.

This is a smart book, aimed at an academic audience but useful for a general reader who is interested in 19th century American culture and politics. If you are a non-academic reader, you may want to start with Rifkin's *How Did Indians Become Straight* before moving on to this one, but Settler Common Sense is full of intelligent insights about how white settlers felt and continue to feel entitled to space. It turns out that "everyday experience" for white people then and now has everything to do with territory, sovereignty, and polity, but entitled senses of being in the world just feel natural, not political. The book has a thing or two to say to queer politics, too; whether your idea of escape from oppression is communing with nature or going to a big city, Rifkin will remind you of the long history of exploitation involved in these movements. For those interested in 19th century American literature and culture, the book contains surprising and delightful readings of the Native American presence in Hawthorne, Thoreau, and Melville.

Academic Yawn

Rifkin appears to have good things to say about 19th century American literature and settlers' affairs with Native Americans but he wraps it in so much tongue-twisting yawn-inducing academese that I can't for the life of me figure out what he's saying. He seems to implicate Henry David Thoreau (yes, Henry David Thoreau!) in some kind of masturbatory machinations but I can't quite fathom their nature (or unnature, as the case may be).
