Policy-making is often selective, the authors find, and governments are more responsive to economic exigencies than to social or environmental needs. Finally, these city-regions are shown to be strong economic leaders in part because they are able to change—although the authors reveal that pragmatism and piecemeal policy solutions can still prevail.

The Right to Be Out begins with a cogent history and analysis of the dramatic legal developments concerning the rights of LGBT persons since 1968. Stuart Biegel then turns to what K-12 schools should do-and in many cases have already done-to implement right-to-be-out policies. He examines recent legal and public policy changes that affect LGBT students and educators in the K-12 public school system. Underlying all of these issues, he shows, is an implicit tension about the right to be out, a right that is seen as fundamental within LGBT communities today and, legally, draws on both the First Amendment right to express an identity and the Fourteenth Amendment right to be treated equally. Biegel addresses the implications of asserting and protecting this right within the hotly contested terrain of America's public schools.
This book is a valuable resource for K-12 school administrators, parents, teacher organizations, mental health professionals and school counselors, LGBT advocacy groups, and the legal community. A safe and supportive educational environment for all students is possible, Biegel concludes, if built on shared values and a belief in the strength of our pluralistic society.

Maurer in this study examines adult status as a criterion of item selection for preschool tests. Files in the Institute of Child Welfare at the University of Minnesota contain data on children tested with the Minnesota Preschool Scales beginning in 1926. Mrs. Maurer sought out a large group of these same subjects, now young adults, secured their cooperation, and retested them with an adult measure of intelligence. This report contains her evaluation of the test items in the preschool scales in terms of this group's performance as adults. Mrs. Maurer says: "With the possible exception of records referred to by Wellman on children who attended the University of Iowa nursery school and who are now of college age, I know of no longitudinal records that compare in length with those made available by retesting individuals studied as early as 1926 at Minnesota." The need for instruments that predict development over a span of years has long been felt by agencies which place children for adoption and seek homes that will give them opportunity for maximal growth and happiness. Not only would adoptive parents be protected if given children who could make full use of the opportunities offered, but all parents would be able to plan more intelligently for the care and education of their children if good predictive measures were available.

Just a plain paperback spiral bound notebook, but I suppose it gets the job done.

Notebook is ok. It is spiral bound and the description nor photo indicated this. It is a paperback plain notebook. Virtually unknown to mainstream moviegoers in the U.S. and even to most connoisseurs of foreign films, Italian director Dario Argento is highly esteemed among aficionados of the cinematic extremities. He's been called the Italian Hitchcock, but his work--11 films in the horror and thriller genres during the last 25 years--is far more lurid and violent than Hitchcock's. Argento often dispenses with such niceties as character development and narrative coherence in favor of the over-the-top effects his fans love; for example, in one film, a killer's madness is illustrated by shots of his pulsating brain. Most of Argento's American following consists of "psychotronic" types who disdain the scholarly critical approach, but for its verve, individualism, and technical virtuosity, Argento's work warrants such treatment. McDonagh strikes an effective balance between intellectuality and enthusiasm, offering film-by-film commentary enlivened by a generous helping of poster and production-still reproductions and topping everything off with a recent interview with Argento in which he admits, "I like when people are disgusted, because it means you've made an impression on them. Fascinating look at the Gialli Rancher

This is a great book. If you're a fan of Dario Argento, the Italian maestro of horror, or if you're just a fan of well-made, artistically-minded horror films, you should read this book (and should take a closer look at the films of Dario Argento).
"Broken Mirrors/Broken Minds" is out of print, but you can buy a used copy through Amazon.com (as I did) for a cheaper price. But then you must prepare yourself for a whirl-wind.
This book discusses in intimate detail the films of the great Dario Argento. The introduction gives us some context of who he is (ex-film critic, master of the beautiful and profane), where he came from (an Italian movie-making family and the tutelage of spaghetti-western-maker Sergio Leone), what he does (makes a particular style of thriller called a giallo and often draws on the broken imagery of dreams for his most effective material).
Then we're off on a film-by-film analysis of Argento's career. We study the films he's made, the choices he's made within those films, and gain an appreciation, if we don't already have one, of why this Argento is such a unique, talented film-maker.
"Broken Mirrors/Broken Minds" often reads like the film school thesis which it is. Words and phrases like "diegetic," "filmic," and the old favorite "mise-en-scene" abound. But you shouldn't let that deter you, even if you aren't of the overly critical, or analytical stock. There is a lot of fascinating stuff in this book, and you're sure to walk away from it with a bigger, more profound appreciation for the films and career of one of the greats in the horror field, Dario Argento. And if you haven't seen all of Argento's films, or if it's been a while, reading this book is a great excuse to catch up on them.
What surprised me most about this book was that it was written by a woman. I didn't realize until I turned the last page of the book and read the "about the author" section that Maitland McDonagh has two X chromosomes. I guess I assumed because of the subject matter--the deliriously violent, at times arguably woman-unfriendly world of Dario Argento's deep red "filmic" nightmares--that a man must have written the book. But what a great perspective is given from the eyes and mind of a woman writing intelligently about horror films. You must go get this book.

Amazing work on an interesting filmmaker

Maitland has written a very admirable study of one of the world's most interesting horror filmmakers. She even goes to the trouble of defending the more nonsensical moments of Arengto's films. For example, the scene in Suspiria where a murder victim stumbles across a room full of barbed wire makes no logical sense, but after you read Maitland explain how Argento works (kind of like surrealists, he uses a technique called "Automatic writing" which involves very little, if any, editing) you begin to understand that maybe Argento isn't neccesarily TRYING to make sense. At any rate she does a fine job of defending him, as well as delving into recurring themes. One of the better books on a director you will ever read.

Psychoanalyzing the Giallo Master and His Films

I must say I have not read the added material in this new edition of Maitland's study on Argento and am not eager to - not because of her but because of him - Argento, Giallo Master. I read Maitland's original hardcover and bought it when she and Argento appeared together at a Brooklyn series of screenings of some of his films many years ago. She kindly signed my book which was a red and white hardcover of a knife slashing down as I remember, from Suspiria no doubt - as was the title which I recognized and loved immediately. It promised a serious, in depth study of his films,(one of the first to do so), placing them in the revered canon of greatest horror films. The study is so well written and interesting and I like how she went chronologically from film to film and plumbed the depths of each one, offering myriad insights and discussing influences on certain films from other directors, i.e. the maid waiting in the park in Four Flies/the lover waiting in the graveyard in Lewton's The Leopard Man. It seems Argento is half influenced by Val Lewton and half by Mario Bava (which he oddly denies) - both terrific influences but Argento makes his own unique films with his own energy level second to none. She also mentions Bird is adapted from the great mystery writer Fredric Brown's classic The Screaming Mimi. Though Brown is uncredited. Since Maitland's book was originally published, scores of unseen giallos became available for viewing and I found many more influences on Dario's films from them. But during his great years he remained the master. Maitland takes a look at his work from an intellectual, scholarly viewpoint which I am fascinated by big time. At last she was legitimizing his films as having artistic merit and recognizing his unrelenting baroque style as a major technique in genre film making of the 70's and 80's. Her book ended with Two Evil Eyes (of which I recall she viewed a bit suspiciously) and apparently in a revision, she reviewed Trauma, which I did not read. Argento became an uninteresting filmmaker to me after the last of his masterpieces OPERA, so I do not know this author's take on his later oeuvre; the only work Argento did after 1987 that I liked was the rather charming/inoffensive Do You Like Hitchcock? and Insomnia, his so called return to pure giallo, with its several legitimate set pieces, but it still is not one of his greats, but a decent offering at least (minus the Deep Red rip off sequence). His other films from 1987 on are complete washouts IMHO. But Maitland captures his years of greatness beautifully - from Bird to Opera - in the version of her book that I read.

Time to really look AND listen. Good read.

kindle edition - poorly formated

I downloaded the Kindle edition of this book and it is poorly formatted: the footnotes are NOT LINKED. There is no reasonable way to find the footnotes and then get back to where you left off reading - for this reason, I find it impossible to read this digital edition.

Keeping it Real

Billie Montgomery Cook, a drama ministry coordinator at Third Baptist Church in Portsmouth Virginia, writes a concise book, The Real Deal A Spiritual Guide for Black Teen Girls, that can help teen girls get through this transitional period.

Starting with the premise that the body is a temple, Cook divides the book into three parts: Part One is good temple design. Part Two is temple construction. Construction Challenges is Part Three. A final part is finishing touches for your temple. In each section, she writes short chapters on the subjects that aid in the designing and building of the temple. For example, in the temple design section, self-esteem, truth, gratitude, faith, hope and love set the foundation. In the temple construction part, friendship, knowledge, spiritual discipline, prayer and work builds the temple. Part three, the construction challenges include such subjects as ingratitude, revenge, negativity, insecurity, sex, fear and lack of confidence.

Cook begins each chapter as though she is writing a letter to a daughter. Each letter is written in an informal and conversational style and language that teens can easily read and understand. Each letter presents the world's views and lifestyles. Cook counters this lifestyle by showing how God wants His people to live. Cook provides just enough information on both sides for the teen to think before she acts. At the end of each letter is a prayer, questions and a space for the teen to write or say her own prayer.

I find this book very interesting because some of those issues she wrote to teen girls could very well apply to the 21+ age group, too. Her straight-forward writing keeps your attention, and, her biblical references will get you reading the Bible. She says her chapters only touch the surface. She is correct. She could say much more. However, touching the surface works for teen girls who need short, simple and real information. For those teens who want to read more, she suggests some additional resources. A bibliography at the end of the book would have been helpful. Bible stories that address the issues presented would be useful, too. Without the bibliography and the biblical stories, the book is still a good read and it is certainly a good guide for teens girls. I would certainly recommend this book as a resource for a teen girl bible study group. With the mass of print and electronic media portraying girls as anything but Godly and virtuous, Cook's book establishes a different and higher standard of living.

A tool for private or group use!

Billie Montgomery/Cook, a "dear sister-friend" of mine, gifted to me, a copy of The Real Deal: A Spiritual Guide for Black Teen Girls. It wasn't long afterwards that our church Women's Ministry met and I realized that it was my time to present. The guide was a perfect tool for which to use with the ladies. At the time, there was a young lady who had just completed high school, and was off to college away from home, which made me realize why she needed this book. The book is easy to read and lent itself to an open forum of discussion regarding issues that may seem in the "white elephant" category. Billie has made the reading and the writing easy to serve as a guideline for discussion. As a result, I purchased 10 copies and gave each person an opportunity to leave the meeting with a copy in hand. Great effort; great spiritual guide!

Illuminating

Every now and again you come across a book that you can only describe as liberating, because it is able to shed light on some crucial problem in your lived experience the reasons for which you were somehow blind to or were unable to adequately recognize. Having lived several years in Dubai and elsewhere in the Gulf, this is one book that I'm especially grateful for. Kanna's study provides an insightful analysis and critique of new forms of structural oppression that emerge from the collusion of neoliberalism and local politics. The book highlights the (at times unwitting) role of new global elites, such as starchitects, in this process. And it also says a good deal about why those of us who live in this part of the world for generations--whether "local" or "expat"--remain blind to the factors that render invisible the causes of the various forms of systemic inequality we experience here.

This book is an obvious work of consequence. However, the author is so wrapped up in sounding intelligent(which he no-doubt is) and schlorly, his message gets muddled. Just because a book is "easy" to understand does not mean its message is simple.

I read this book and it shows that not only humans but animals can be HEROES, too. Just as well, it shows that animals also can save lives if not do a greater deed in your lifetime. This was my favorite book. The favorite chapter in my opinion was the courageous cat that fought off a deadly intruder.

Excellent Stories but Questions Hold

I have had this book for many years, and the stories in it are the definition of "short sweet and too the point", making it a very good read for those in it's target demographic, the only thing holding me back from a 5 rating is the title, "True Tales" I ran a search on several of the stories looking for some supplemental information but was unable to find any news reports or confirmation of these stories happening, Unless someone could bring forward evidence to the contrary I would be hesitant to list this as Nonfiction. Accuracy notwithstanding this is still a very good read.
