ISBN 0816717885 - The McGurk Detective Organization is, as always, as ready as they're going to get. The friends and their foibles are a nice constant background to the case of the moment.

Wanda has a guest. Her pen-pal from Japan, Mari, is visiting. This is not a good time for this, at least in McGurk's opinion. He's set this week aside to put his detectives through a rigorous promotion exam, and the distraction (not to mention infraction) of a visitor sitting in on official business annoys the boss. It helps that Mari has a case of hero worship for McGurk, but not enough to change his mind. When she takes the exam alongside Wanda, more for her own amusement than anything else, she starts outdoing McGurk's people and that makes him look at her with new respect.

On the second day of exams, a real mystery presents itself to the kids, in an overheard phone conversation. A crime will be committed at the Senior Citizen's Picnic on Friday. Now, all they have to do is figure out what the crime will be, who the victim(s) will be, who the criminals are and how to stop them. And time is running out!

McGurk's always a little rough around the edges. In this book, he's a little harsh and rude to Mari. That's McGurk, but for parents who have concerns about those things, I mention it. If you're just interested in getting your kid's nose into a book. McGurk's a good choice. Since it's 2007, few will catch this little tidbit, but it's fun - Brains is working on creating a pocket cordless telephone... in 1985, when the book was copyrighted, the cell phone was still a few years away!

Children’s literature has spent decades on the psychiatrist’s couch, submitting to psychoanalysis by scores of scholars and popular writers alike. Freud in Oz turns the tables, suggesting that psychoanalysts owe a significant and largely unacknowledged debt to books ostensibly written for children. In fact, Kenneth B. Kidd argues, children’s literature and psychoanalysis have influenced and interacted with each other since Freud published his first case studies.

In Freud in Oz, Kidd shows how psychoanalysis developed in part through its engagement with children’s literature, which it used to articulate and dramatize its themes and methods, turning first to folklore and fairy tales, then to materials from psychoanalysis of children, and thence to children’s literary texts, especially such classic fantasies as Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. He traces how children’s literature, and critical response to it, aided the popularization of psychoanalytic theory. With increasing acceptance of psychoanalysis came two new genres of children’s literature—known today as picture books and young adult novels—that were frequently fashioned as psychological in their forms and functions.

Freud in Oz offers a history of reigning theories in the study of children’s literature and psychoanalysis, providing fresh insights on a diversity of topics, including the view that Maurice Sendak and Bruno Bettelheim can be thought of as rivals, that Sendak’s makeover of monstrosity helped lead to the likes of the Muppets, and that “Poohology” is its own kind of literary criticism—serving up Winnie the Pooh as the poster bear for theorists of widely varying stripes.

Children's Literature Teaches Psychologists Plenty

Kidd's main goal is to tell "a story about the historical encounters of children's literature and psychoanalysis, thereby suggesting new directions for research. (p. 205). It is a masterwork of careful research and synthesis--almost one third of the book is devoted to notes and bibliography. He likes to venture where few have gone before. His excellent Making American Boys: Boyology and the Feral Tale (Univ of Minn, 2005), was the first thorough study of boyology. Over the Rainbow: Queer Children and Young Adult Literature (Univ of Mich, 2011) was the first scholarly collection of essays devoted to LGBTQ issues and children's literature.

Scholars and critics have devoted endless time to analyzing books for children. Freud in Oz makes the original and compelling case that psychoanalysis owes an even bigger debt to those same books using them to articulate and dramatize its themes and methods. Kidd hopes to call "sufficient attention to psychoanalysis' debts to the materials and forms of children's literature" (xxvii).

When putting children's literature on the couch, the scholar's obvious starting point is the märchen--the so-called "fairy tale" that became "enshrined as the cornerstone of children's literature" primarily because psychoanalysis consolidated it as such. Freud and others delved into these tales to find out about "primitive man." Freud had the huge collection of märchen compiled by the Grimm brothers at hand, and all major psychologists still apply psychoanalytic theory to folklore. Freudians look for infantile dramas; Jungians discover spiritual truths, but all made a compelling case for intimacy of fairy tales and childhood. Bruno Bettelheim's The Uses of Enchantment (1976), while derivative in nature, "effectively synthesized and repackaged decades of psychoanalytic research on childhood and fairy tales" (17) and ensured the folktale became the core of psychoanalysis. Those who argue about the unsuitability of many tales for children have, ironically, helped firmly cement the two together.

There is a chapter devoted to "Poohology," showing how the two books have long been the subject of psychoanalytic and pop psychological discourse. Who can forget Frederick Crews' The Pooh Perplex (1963)? Though some may be surprised to learn Winnie ille Pooh (1958) was the first foreign language title to make the New York Times' bestseller list!
The Pooh books are classics, but they are increasingly the stuff of adult popular discourse. "Poohologists don't just read Pooh, they become Pooh, absorbing and mimicking its lessons and rhythms "(63).

Kidd applies close analysis to three "case studies"-Alice, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz. Case histories undertake the education of the reader, but also include a criticism of ignorance, innocence and immaturity. In American children's literature, the immature male who doesn't want to grow up, has special resonance. Kidd examines Lewis Carroll as Good Carroll/Bad Carroll, noting that what was once regarded as a celibate shyness might be something less palatable. Peter Pan, while a cautionary tale about immaturity, has led to questions about Barrie's sexuality. It was always speculated he had a mother-fixation, and he never recovered from the deaths of his brother and his adopted son, Peter. Films have generally avoided the man-boy love theme, but in In Stephen Spielberg's Hook (1991), the villain tries to win over Jack, Peter's son, by emotional appeals. They go nowhere. It is interesting to note Michael Jackson was scheduled to play Peter because the director thought he was "one of the last living innocents" (quoted 90).

The chapter on Maurice Sendak and Picturebook Psychology is most perceptive. The artist of Where the Wild Things Are returns to the world of folk tale fears. Kidd regards this book as a turning point of picturebook psychology--"reworking in a contemporary idiom, the themes and forms of progressive pedagogy and child analysis as well as those of Freud himself" (135-6).

Freud in Oz concludes with chapters on the young adult novel, a fertile field. Previously, these books were often catalogued as junior novels or adolescent fiction, suggesting it had always been thought of as a psychological form. After 1920, societal changes ushered in a new era of adolescent literature, although authors seldom thought of themselves as writing for young adults.
Young adult fiction naturally included questions of gender, sexuality and interiority. The Catcher in the Rye (1951) created a literary storm, but it wasn't the first book to deal with identity in relation to sex and gender, though it masculinized the genre. Kidd believes Maureen Daly's Seventeenth Summer (1942) is a legitimate starting point for the modern young adult novel. The author insists in taking the problems and emotions of the heroine seriously. Angie is allowed "a rich and even autoerotic inner life" (161).

Finally, Kidd turns to the literature of atrocity. Astonishingly, considering the long-held view that childhood should be a time of happiness and free of stress, literature intended for children has become the home for works of trauma. "It is the amalgam of literary and psychological discourse in which certain kinds of trauma take priority" (182). Moreover, the picturebook offers the most dramatic view of trauma. We may have come from witches and werewolves to the Twin Towers. It is still atrocious and psychologically troubling.

Freud in Oz is an original work, wide-ranging and essential to the study of children's literature and psychology, written in an easy flowing style, free of the usual pomposity of scholarly publications, yet revealing the author's all-consuming knowledge of the subject. He should be very proud of this book.

Kenneth Kidd's genius is geographic and lies in his ability to demarcate and describe the myriad endeavors of various critics engaged with children's literature. Here he examines: 1) using psychoanalysis to interpret children's literature; 2) using children's literature to explain psychoanalysis; 3) valuing children's literature because of its psychological benefits to the young; and-this is where Kidd mostly hangs out-4) valuing psychology because of its benefits to children's literature and its authors and critics. This book is an amazing mandala. It's like watching the Cat in the Hat breathlessly balancing (on hands and feet, on head and tail) an incredible array of items.

She offers an in-depth portrait, enriched by nearly seventy interviews, of the San Gabriel Valley, not far from downtown Los Angeles, where approximately 60 percent of residents are Asian American and more than 30 percent are Latino. At first glance, the cities of the San Gabriel Valley look like stereotypical suburbs, but almost no one who lives there is white.

The Changs Next Door to the Díazes reveals how a distinct culture is being fashioned in, and simultaneously reshaping, an environment of strip malls, multifamily housing, and faux Mediterranean tract homes. Informed by her interviews as well as extensive analysis of three episodic case studies, Cheng argues that people’s daily experiences—in neighborhoods, schools, civic organizations, and public space—deeply influence their racial consciousness. In the San Gabriel Valley, racial ideologies are being reformulated by these encounters. Cheng views everyday landscapes as crucial terrains through which racial hierarchies are learned, instantiated, and transformed. She terms the process “regional racial formation,” through which locally accepted racial orders and hierarchies complicate and often challenge prevailing notions of race.

There is a place-specific state of mind here, Cheng finds. Understanding the processes of racial formation in the San Gabriel Valley in the contemporary moment is important in itself but also has larger value as a model for considering the spatial dimensions of racial formation and the significant demographic shifts taking place across the national landscape.

Great book for understanding contemporary Los Angeles

Wendy Cheng provides an excellent example of how Asians and Latinos are crafting Los Angeles into the harbinger of American identity in the 21st century. The book is based on personal stories that allow everyday people to share how they've managed to create life-affirming and aspirational identities out of the detritus of things like housing segregation and racial discrimination in a local boy scout troop. Read this book!

A book that will salve the conscience of those who want to feel comfortable in claiming that they both "love" animals and, at the same time, don't mind profiting (usually, and unnecessarily, in the form of food) off their suffering. Like "The Omnivore's Dilemma," this book will make such people feel righteous in the half-baked, self-serving "moral schizophrenia" (to use Gary Francione's term) they inhabit with regard to animals. A book for the--when all is said and done--largely self-serving cycle-of-life (as long as they remain the predator and not the prey) crowd. In sum, a profoundly uninteresting book.

Possibly the worst book on this subject

Rudy, an academic, counsels us to "embrace" animals with our "hearts," and to seek meaningful "connection" with them through our "affects." What animals need, she says, are not legal protections or rights--just a big squishy hug. The inanity of this argument is significant on its own terms, but it is overshadowed by the author's truly perverse rendering of "love" in the prevailing context, which is one in which humans systematically exploit, torture, and kill literally billions of our "love objects." Incredibly, there is no animal industry that Rudy would abolish. Rudy not only defends the confinement and killing of animals for food, ad infinitum, but also laboratory experiments on animals, hunting, zoos, and a whole lot more. What is finally most disturbing about this weird admixture of sentimental treacle and spine-chilling dissociation is the author's own cluelessness about the central contradiction of her own text and life, which is her almost religious conviction that one can practice "compassion" toward other beings while murdering them. N.B. I say "possibly" the worst book on the subject of animal ethics only because there are many other terrible ones also. But this one does stand out "above the pack" in its own dismal way.

Baseless Dribble

For an academic, Ms Rudy hasn't taken the least bit of time to research the issue of animal agriculture. She spits out industry propaganda like she had a financial stake in cruelty, climate change, heart disease and cancer. If you want the wool pulled over your eyes, then this is the book for you!

The authors—a diverse group writing from the disciplines of sociology, political science, education, public policy, and media theory—argue that human agency and public policy choices were more at fault for the devastation and mass suffering experienced along the Gulf Coast than were sheer forces of nature. The harrowing images of flattened homes, citizens stranded on rooftops, patients dying in makeshift hospitals, and dead bodies floating in floodwaters exposed the moral and political contradictions of neoliberalism—the ideological rejection of the planner state and the active promotion of a new order of market rule.

Many of these essays offer critical insights on the saga of postdisaster reconstruction. Challenging triumphal narratives of civic resiliency and universal recovery, the authors bring to the fore pitched battles over labor rights, gender and racial justice, gentrification, the development of city master plans, the demolition of public housing, policing, the privatization of public schools, and roiling tensions between tourism-based economic growth and neighborhood interests. The contributors also expand and deepen more conventional critiques of “disaster capitalism” to consider how the corporate mobilization of philanthropy and public good will are remaking New Orleans in profound and pernicious ways.

Neoliberal Deluge

I picked up this book looking for an accessible and informative primer on neoliberalism, and that is what I found. By focusing on New Orleans after Katrina, the authors included are able to demonstrate how neoliberalism passes through the private sector, volunteerism, and, of course, government actions. Most useful is the way that the authors highlight the difficult to define nature of neoliberalism by showing how different actions, even those that seem contradictory, can be folded into the neoliberal regime depending on the situation. While, I would agree with the other reviewer that this book is not meant for a casual, post-Harry Potter 7 read, this is easily one of the most engaging and accessible books on neoliberalism out there. Especially, if you don't hold a grudge because you were required to read it during a class.

I was required to read this for a sociology class. The stories behind this are great, but it is very much a textbook with stories that are complicated to follow. That being said, I wouldn't recommend this as a casual reading book.

Larry Millett was a reporter and architecture critic for the St. Paul Pioneer Press for thirty years. Shadwell Rafferty is back

I'm so glad to see Mr. Millett back with his famous detective; it's true that Sherlock Holmes only appears for a short vignette, but who cares? I bought this so I could read about Rafferty. He hasn't quite caught his stride with this character yet; it lacks the humor of the earlier books, but it's still delightful. John Dickson Carr fans take note; this locked room mystery is a tribute to that mystery author.

Entertaining Locked Room Mystery

I don't naturally gravitate toward locked-room mysteries, though I don't avoid them, either. This is one that I read with enthusiasm and pleasure. First, I enjoyed the mystery itself. Because the author writes about architecture, I suspected that the clue to the murder would have to do with architecture. I found the solution satisfying.

Second, I enjoyed the characters and the setting, both the Twin Cities themselves and the World War I time period. The author did an excellent job of weaving in information about the labor strife of the times, the patriotism committees which sought to repress all civil rights, the growing temperance movement, and the government's control of production and pricing according to war-time guidelines.

Third, the book is well-written. The flow from scene to scene is smooth and the author is in complete control of sentences and paragraphs and point of view. This was a pleasure to read.

Good book, but why keep dragging in Sherlock Holmes?

A man who is locked into his 30th-floor office is shot and killed -- murdered! All his windows are shut and intact. He was apparently alone at the time. There is no weapon left behind and no smell of gunpowder in the air. How could it have been done?

This is a locked room mystery, and an homage to the most famous writer of locked-room mysteries, J.D. Carr. If you like locked room mysteries, you will definitely enjoy this one. If you're a fan of locked room mysteries of the past, you will find references to them tucked into the pages of this book. Some of the less prominent characters in the book have been given the names of various detectives of locked-room mysteries. J.D. Carr himself appears in the story! So that's all fun.

I know that a lot of people really like Shadwell Rafferty, and I don't dislike him myself. But I don't understand why Larry Millett can't give up on Holmes and just write Rafferty books. It's false advertising to write a 300-plus page book with Holmes in maybe 8 pages, and call that "featuring Sherlock Holmes". If Holmes were actually in the book, sure. But not for "manuscript fragments" or as in the fourth book of the series, pages from John Waton's diaries. But I shouldn't complain, because at least Holmes's name is not actually in this title.

But Holmes's name is part of the subtitle of this book, "A Locked Room Mystery featuring Shadwell Rafferty and Sherlock Holmes," even though Holmes is in it for only one chapter, and at that, the chapter is represented to be a fragment of a manuscript by Dr. John Watson. So really, that's how long Sherlock Holmes is in this book: for a fragment of a manuscript. So it's kind of a stretch to say the book features Sherlock Holmes.

It's also kind of odd to say the book "features" Shadwell Rafferty, when it's actually all about him. If you like Shadwell Rafferty, and you chose this book because you wanted more stories about him, this book should be a very satisfactory read to you.

About the Author
Newsweek magazine has said that Gardner Taylor is one of the twelve greatest preachers in the English-speaking world. He is considered by many to be the greatest living African American preacher. The recipient of over 100 honorary degrees, he served as pastor of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn for forty-two years. He is the author of the six volume series, The Words of Gardner Taylor (Judson Press). Since retiring in 1990, he has maintained an active travel and speaking schedule. In 2000, he received The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, recognizing exceptional meritorious service.

Having had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Taylor preach on many occasions while growing up in Brooklyn, NY, to read, remember and be reminded of his dynamic and anointed persona was and remains nothing short of a spiritual revelation and awakening.
