Uncompromising and honest

Published journals by their very nature can be dull and opaque. If you're not familiar with the author's creative work and life it's easy to get lost in a forest of names and references which leaves you feeling bored and alienated. For this reason, journals generally dissaude you from reading them cover to cover though they may be quite illuminating when dipped into. That's not the case with this, the final volume of Jarman's journals. The way he writes is so direct and frank that it is utterly compelling. I didn't want to skip any of it. Jarman's uncompromising approach to art and life must have alienated a lot of people (on the margins as well as in the mainstream). Good! We need to be shaken up. Jarman shows his courage here but also his vulnerability. The journals are never mawkish or sentimental, but they left me greatly moved. Jarman continued to work on films, books and paintings while dealing with the daily burden of HIV-related illness and this book documents that process. It's also very much about the people who surrounded him and the things he liked to do, particularly in relation to his cottage and the unique and celebrated garden at Dungeness. Vale, Derek. I wish I could have told you how much I admire you.

Highly recommend

This is the kind of smart and savvy book about colonial photography that some of us have been waiting for! There have been a lot of good historical studies that lacked theoretical innovation, and lots of theorizing about photography without a sense of its historical grounding. This book manages to do both, and while it's based in empirical research it doesn't just present new evidence but it shows how the photographic "evidence" contributes to our understandings of sense perception, truth, and imperialism. For an academic study, this book is actually a pleasure to read, and yet Chaudhary doesn't sacrifice any of the complexities of his theoretical argument about photography and colonialism. What I found so helpful here was the author's discussion of phenomenology in the context of colonial history, but this book also manages to cover a lot of related ground: photographic meaning as a kind of rhetoric, war photography's aesthetic effects, the differential meanings of aesthetic and technological forms as they travel around the globe, the complexities of sympathy in photographs of human suffering. If you're looking for a basic history of photography in India, this book won't be your cup of tea (check out James Ryan's and Christopher Pinney's books), but if you're looking for something more original, I highly recommend this book.

Dense, but worth the read.

A bit dense, very academic, but the historical overview is fantastic, the images are evocative, and when it's telling a story, its effectively on point. It's biggest drawback are the points when it delves into conceptual and theoretical discussions: they are extremely well argued and meticulously researched, just hard to process, requiring multiple read throughs to successfully grasp. When the book explains historical developments and socio-political actions revolving around the use of photography, you will find yourself taking notes for further reference into this fascinating period of Indian history.

About the Author
Jason Richard Curry, PhD, MDiv, is the current Dean of the Chapel at Fisk University. Rev. Dr. Curry previously served as senior pastor at the historic St. Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. A Master of Divinity graduate from Harvard Divinity School, Dr. Curry received his doctorate from Vanderbilt University. His research focused on pastoral counseling as informed by both his theoretical and practical experience on the topic. As a doctoral student, Curry was a participant in Vanderbilt University’s clinical seminars at the Vine Street Pastoral Counseling Center and he was also an intern for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Project. While completing his Masters’ Degree, Curry served the African-American community of Roxbury, MA as a counselor and case manager.

I give this work of Pastoral Counseling a five star. Pastor Curry writes from the heart multiple ways to bring awareness on "how to best" minister to parishioners. It's a little book; but chalk full of information regarding counseling in the church and outside of the church. I recommend it to church leaders and counselors of the Christian faith.

The Right to Be Out begins with a cogent history and analysis of the dramatic legal developments concerning the rights of LGBT persons since 1968. Stuart Biegel then turns to what K-12 schools should do-and in many cases have already done-to implement right-to-be-out policies. He examines recent legal and public policy changes that affect LGBT students and educators in the K-12 public school system.
Underlying all of these issues, he shows, is an implicit tension about the right to be out, a right that is seen as fundamental within LGBT communities today and, legally, draws on both the First Amendment right to express an identity and the Fourteenth Amendment right to be treated equally. Biegel addresses the implications of asserting and protecting this right within the hotly contested terrain of America's public schools.
This book is a valuable resource for K-12 school administrators, parents, teacher organizations, mental health professionals and school counselors, LGBT advocacy groups, and the legal community. A safe and supportive educational environment for all students is possible, Biegel concludes, if built on shared values and a belief in the strength of our pluralistic society.

Hip Hop and Politics

We often discuss the political impact of hip hop culture, particularly because of its growing popularity. However, it is rare to find a book that discusses politics and hip hip in a quantitative manner. This book uses political science's framework and methods to detail a relationship between rap music, hip hop culture and politics in the U.S. This book is a great read that could be easily read by a variety of audiences. It provides a different prospective to both the study of Black politics and rap music. This book introduces a new ideological framework of neoliberalism and detail its relationship with rap music. It does not leave any stone uncovered. While it discusses the impact of rap music on political attitude acceptance, it also discusses the commercialization of the genre and the impact that has had on rap music and production. Finally, this author discuss how politicians have used hip hop for symbolism and to gain votes, such as President Obama and former Mayor of Detroit Kilpatrick. A Must read!!! The author adds a new perspective to the relationship between rap music, hip hop culture and politics in America. It is a great book and contributes to the fields of politics, black studies, american studies, and cultural studies.

A very savvy book on Hip-Hop culture and political affiliations

makes apparent comparisons of political affiliations and applies them to people who don't vote. lol. Lester Spence reminds me of why our black intellectuals are so important, they are on the front lines of all things that affect black communities. There is no way Hip-Hop culture can be considered politically isolated when all politics in existens in this country wither involve or affect us.

About the Author

F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and spent much of his youth living in the Crocus Hill neighborhood. He went on to become one of the most famous American novelists of the twentieth century, often drawing on his youthful experiences in St. Paul in his stories and novels.

The original diary was just 14 pages long

Although this book is stated to be 88 pages in length, be aware that the childhood notebook that is transcribed here was only 14 pages long. The introductory forward and afterward take up more pages than the actual writings of Fitzgerald. It is a very brief book, that can be read in its entirety in an hour or less. I was a little disappointed, but overall was glad to have read it.

The editor's Afterward is thoughtful and well written in its discussion of how Fitgerald mined the activities and dialogue of his notebook to use in later works. One can easily see how Fitzgerald's adolescent writings presage his later subject matter and style. The transcription of the notebook preserves Fitzgerald's original spelling and grammar. However, there are some errors by Dave Page, the editor, in his own manuscript, that should have been identified and corrected (i.e. spelling the girl's name "Kitty" as "Kiddy").

A pleasant surprise!

As a Fitzgerald completist, I thought this might go in the "extra track and a tacky badge" category, but I thought it was superb. It provides great insight into FSF's childhood and stories of childhood, which is a hugely important theme for him. Highly recommend for serious fans of Fitzgerald's work.

Considering such artists as Marina Abramovic, James Luna, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Eduardo Kac, and Ann Hamilton, Blocker investigates the artists and spectators who look, the technologies they look with, and the forms of power and moral authority that permit their viewing.

Going beyond particular traumatic or sensational events, Blocker contemplates the politics of witnessing and argues that the witness represents a morally unique—and even problematic—position of privilege. Separating Seeing Witness from previous literature on the subject, she finds that the visual is inherent in witnessing and asserts that contemporary art is integral to questioning and understanding how witnessing is mobilized in culture today.

The earliest accounts of the Micmac Indians were written by seventeenth-century French explorers and missionaries. These give historical perspective to the work done by the Wallises, whose research is based on field trips that bridged a 40-years span. Dr. Wallis first observed the Micmac tribes in 1911–12. He and Mrs. Wallis revisited them in 1950 and 1953, assessing the changes in material cultural and in orientation, drives, and motivations. In addition, they have preserved a rich collection of Micmac folktales and traditions, published as a separate section of the book.
