Rather than reading their self-presentations as “closeted,” de Villiers suggests that they invent and deploy productive strategies of “opacity” that resist the closet and the confessional discourse associated with it. Deconstructing binaries linked with the closet that have continued to influence both gay and straight receptions of these intellectual and pop celebrities, de Villiers illuminates the philosophical implications of this displacement for queer theory and introduces new ways to think about the space they make for queerness.

Using the works of Foucault, Barthes, and Warhol to engage each other while exploring their shared historical context, de Villiers also shows their queer appropriations of the interview, the autobiography, the diary, and the documentary—forms typically linked to truth telling and authenticity.

Long ago First Man and First Woman of the Cherokees lived happily in the green forest, among colorful birds and fish-filled ponds. One spring day they disagreed about which path to take, and First Woman grew very angry. She went her own way. "What do I care?" First Man asked himself. Soon he saw it was a silly fight; he ran after her but could not catch up. The Great Spirit intervened and first put out grapes, then wild cherries, then huckleberry bushes to tempt First Woman to slow down. She ignored them all. So he created a new berry, red, irresistibly delicious and growing close to the ground. It worked! After First Woman had stopped to eat her fill, she soon ran to seek First Man. "Are you still angry?" Great Spirit asked her. "No, the sweetness of these berries has reminded me of the sweetness of our love." When she found her husband, they shared the wonderful berry, anger forgotten. Since that time strawberries have always been there to remind them and their children of their mutual love. The book offers a dozen more illustrated pages of actual Cherokee history, including the Cherokee syllabary published by Sequoyah in 1821. The courage of the Cherokee against enduring mistreatment, their present unity and high hopes suggest that maybe--against much evidence--it really was that wise people who first found strawberries!

Wonderful Legend, Beautiful Illustrations + Tribal Info Too

The first part of the book is a heart-warming legend with vibrant illustrations; the second half could stand alone as a short history of the Cherokee tribe, important people & events, etc complete with photos, a map, etc. We bought it for the legend & the tribal info was a fantastic surprise; it even includes a Cherokee syllabary chart. What a great way to present literature, art, history, & anthropology!

This is a sweet, clever tale

This is a sweet, clever tale. Based on a Cherokee legend, the prose are simple and strong, and when paired with these stylized illustration, the overall effect is lovely. First Man and First Woman live in harmony, until they have a disagreement. In her anger, First Woman strides off and ignored First Man's attempt to catch up. The Great Spirit creates the bright red strawberry, to tempt First Woman and remind her of the love between her and First Man. It's a fun story with the ring of truth to it. In addition to the story, the last few pages have simplified facts about Cherokee history and heritage, complete with pictures. It's a fabulous addition to the story. I highly recommend this book for any kids, and it would be an excellent addition to classroom.

But what does it actually mean to grow up Scandinavian-American or to live with these Norwegians, Swedes, Finns, Danes, and Icelanders among us? In Vikings in the Attic, Dregni tracks down and explores the significant—and quite often bizarre—historic sites, tales, and traditions of Scandinavia’s peculiar colony in the Midwest. It’s a legacy of the unique—collecting silver spoons, a suspicion of flashy clothing, shots of turpentine for the common cold, and a deep love of rhubarb pie—but also one of poor immigrants living in sod houses while their children attend college, the birth of the co-op movement, the Farmer–Labor party, and government agents spying on Scandinavian meetings hoping to nab a socialist or antiwar activist.
For all the tales his grandparents told him, Dregni quickly discovers there are quite a few they neglected to mention, such as Swedish egg coffee, which includes the eggshell, and Lutheran latte, which is Swedish coffee with ice cream. Vikings in the Attic goes beyond the lefse, lutefisk, and lusekofter (lice jacket) sweaters to reveal the little-known tales that lie beneath the surface of Nordic America. Ultimately, Dregni ends up proving by example why generations of Scandinavian-Americans have come to love and cherish these tales and traditions so dearly. Well, almost all of them.*

About the Author
Aside from barely edible fish and rhubarb malts, Eric Dregni has other obsessions ranging from futuristic jet packs and oversized fiberglass town monuments to Zamboni ice resurfacers. He has turned his fixations into sixteen books, including four previous titles with the University of Minnesota Press: In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream, Never Trust a Thin Cook and Other Lessons from Italy’s Culinary Capital, Midwest Marvels, and Minnesota Marvels. He lives in Minneapolis, is dean of the Italian Concordia Language Village, and is assistant professor of English and journalism at Concordia University in St. Paul.

A fun book and a great read.

"Vikings In The Attic" is full of fun stories, history, and information. It's a great read, especially if you didn't grow up Scandinavian and then acquire some by marriage. If you did grow up Scandinavian, you will still learn a lot and have quite a few laughs along the way. Wish I'd had this book when my brother first married a Johnson girl.

Vikings in the Attic

I gave the book 4 stars with the assumption that the reader will have a Scandinavian relationship. I am from Iowa with Norwegian ancestors. If the reader is a Midwesterner of Scandinavian descent then the book will be a hoot, a really good read with lots of interesting detail and stories. It is a light, fun read.

Do you like to play basketball?

If you do then this is the book for you.

This book is about three girls that are best friends. They are very different, but they all love to play basketball. When Middle School eliminates the girls' basketball team they accept to join the boys' team. But playing on the boys' team is much harder than the girls expected. These boys won't let them play. They give the girls a hard time to be accepted. Finally the big game arrives... Will the girls reach their expectations?

I give this book *** stars because I do not consider it a great book. It was fun to read but I didn't get into it that much. I recommend it to people who like to play basketball and who don't like boys! It is more recommended for girls because the main characters are girls. If you are not into sports, I don't you will be interested in this story. Boys will probably not like this kind of book!

Smidge,Skye,and Keisha are three very different girls with one thing in common: they love basketball.So when budget cuts they eliminate the girls' basketball team,so they accept Jefferson Junior High's offer to join the boys team.But playing with the boys is more of a challenge than the girls expect.The boys won't accept girls on their team or in their locker room! As the big game against their rival approaches,the girls must prove themselves to be an important part of the team.And the boys must face a tough question: Can boys and girls ever be teammates-or friends?I hope you read this book because i really enjoyed it, and it proves that girls can do whatever guys do.

this book is realy good i just finshed it the girls make me fill like me and i like books like that. its one og those books were you read it and then you have to put it away because a teacher said you have to go and you dont want to stop reading it kinda of books.its a book were girls would understand it better than guys i would tell all my friends about it .this book is a easy read and you cna just kick back and relax while reading it .i hope you read this book .

Escape from New York does not so much map the many sites of this early twentieth-century Black internationalism as it draws attention to how New Negroes and their global allies already lived. Resituating the Harlem Renaissance, the book stresses the need for scholarship to catch up with the historical reality of the New Negro experience. This more comprehensive vision serves as a lens through which to better understand capitalist developments, imperial expansions, and the formation of brave new worlds in the early twentieth century.

A photo remembrance of the Milwaukee Road

A very nice photo history of the Milwaukee Road, a great railroad that just always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The railroad was very innovative using top industrial designers and often building its own cars & equipment in-it own shops. And this book captures it all. Its not a written history, but in railroading, a picture really does often say a thousand words. I just wish it had been twice as big.

Good, but not a perfect memory

This book is very attractively designed, with generally well-written text and excellent photographs. However, the coverage of The Milwaukee Road is very uneven; the discussion of passenger trains, equipment and services is very wide-ranging, but freight operations receive comparatively little coverage. There is also little detail about the road's intriguing locomotive roster. At best, the book serves as an introduction, albeit a well-crafted one, to these other subjects. The only other strike against the book is the missing photograph on page 24. The map in the back of the book is very useful thanks to its clear graphics.

Established in 1965, the Children's Theatre Company (CTC) of Minneapolis earned its reputation as the flagship theater for young people in this country by staging plays that both entertained and challenged children and their families. "Anon(ymous)" is a contemporary retelling of Homer's Odyssey, set in a dirty North American city, and "Five Fingers of Funk" is a mature musical celebrating the roots of hip-hop while dealing with issues of poverty and drugs. In "The Lost Boys of Sudan," three Dinka refugees flee the horrors of war and begin a harrowing yet humorous journey that takes them to Fargo, ND. And "Prom" is played out as a frenetic battle between students and chaperones. Each of these selections has a distinctive voice, honoring adolescents as both actor and audience capable of understanding and engaging in today's complex issues. Grade 5-8 This sequel begins exactly where Turn Homeward, Hannalee (Morrow, 1984) ended. A preface explains what has gone before, but those who skip it will be able to enjoy this book thoroughly. Hannalee's brother Davey has returned from war without an arm, intent upon moving the family to Atlanta to begin a new life. Hannalee's strength of character and optimism continue to serve her family well, particularly when she finds a job in a dry goods store in order to help support them. When Davey is jailed for murder, Hannalee is able to prove, with the help of a frightened former slave, that her brother is innocent. This fast-paced historical novel chronicles the post Civil War period from the point of view of the Southern white working class who never owned slaves. There is an afterward which describes the historical background upon which this story is based. It is fascinating reading, but like prefaces, afterwards are unfortunately often left unread. Readers will enjoy Hannalee's adventures, her strong love and loyalty to her family, and the start of her first romance. Janet E. Gelfand, Lawrence Junior High School, N.Y.

"Be Ever Hopeful Hannalee" was an excellent book about a young girl "Hannalee" surviving the civil war and trying to get her life back on track with all the difficulties she stil made it through! I loved this books to bits! The thing is I was forced to read this for a social project and I was like "yawn yawn" but I really liked it! I was yes of course so suprised but I could not put it down! Well, I just wanted to say that you should read this book if you love civil war or not! Belive me I am not a historian in the civil war either! I am just a normal 13 year old girl who reads books! Thank you for your time.

A wonderful work of historical fiction

The Civil War has just ended, and 14-year-old Hannalee Reed -- first introduced in "Turn Homeward, Hannalee" -- is desperately trying to rebuild a life for herself and her family. While she and her younger brother Jem were up north, working as servants after being taken from their home by Yankee soldiers, their widowed mother gave birth to baby Paulina. Their older brother Davey returned home, minus an arm.

Finding no means of support after the Yankees destroyed their town's mill, the Reeds decide to head for Atlanta, where they hear opportunities are everywhere. Full of optimism and hope, they discover that the destroyed city is full of others just like them. It's hard to find work amidst all the competition...and no one wants to hire a one-armed man. Housing is expensive, and they have a baby to take care of.

Still, Hannalee is determined to get by. She finds work selling yard goods in the shop of a Yankee widower who recently moved south with his teenage daughter, Mary Anne. Despite lonely Mary Anne's attempts at reaching out, Hannalee is too proud to allow herself friendship with a girl who she deems as the enemy.

Meanwhile, a chance encounter causes Hannalee to meet Delie, a young black girl who was recently freed. She tries to befriend her, but just as Hannalee rebuffed Mary Anne, Delie is suspicious of any white person.

Then Davey is accused of murder, and Delie may be the only eyewitness able to save his life. Desperate, Hannalee sets out to find her...with the help of Mary Anne.

This book is intriguing and well-written. Readers will be able to envision the ruined Atlanta, struggling to rebuild itself, as easily as if they were there themselves, and root for the entire Reed family.

This book was selected for our daughter to use as a book report. She enjoyed the book and has kept it in her collection. I read it, too, as I sometimes like to discuss what she has read. The story was interesting and told a good lesson. She made an A on her book report and that was pleasing, too. This is an especially good book for young teens who are interested in history.

Architecture’s Historical Turn traces the hidden history of architectural phenomenology, a movement that reflected a key turning point in the early phases of postmodernism and a legitimating source for those architects who first dared to confront history as an intellectual problem and not merely as a stylistic question. Jorge Otero-Pailos shows how architectural phenomenology radically transformed how architects engaged, theorized, and produced history. In the first critical intellectual account of the movement, Otero-Pailos discusses the contributions of leading members, including Jean Labatut, Charles Moore, Christian Norberg-Schulz, and Kenneth Frampton. For architects maturing after World War II, Otero-Pailos contends, architectural history was a problem rather than a given. Paradoxically, their awareness of modernism’s historicity led some of them to search for an ahistorical experiential constant that might underpin all architectural expression. They drew from phenomenology, exploring the work of Bachelard, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, and Ricoeur, which they translated for architectural audiences. Initially, the concept that experience could be a timeless architectural language provided a unifying intellectual basis for the stylistic pluralism that characterized postmodernism. It helped give theory—especially the theory of architectural history—a new importance over practice. However, as Otero-Pailos makes clear, architectural phenomenologists could not accept the idea of theory as an end in itself. In the mid-1980s they were caught in the contradictory and untenable position of having to formulate their own demotion of theory. Otero-Pailos reveals how, ultimately, the rise of architectural phenomenology played a crucial double role in the rise of postmodernism, creating the antimodern specter of a historical consciousness and offering the modern notion of essential experience as the means to defeat it.
