"There’s almost no way to describe the beauty with which this book about sled dogs was conceived, written, and illustrated. . . . Born to Pull has a dreamy quality to it, so effectively does it capture a world removed from everyday life and portray the mystical connection between humans and animals." —American Booksellers Association

Blue Guitar Highway, by Paul Metsa

This is a musician’s tale: the story of a boy growing up on the Iron Range, playing his guitar at family gatherings, coming of age in the psychedelic seventies, and honing his craft as a pro in Minneapolis, ground zero of American popular music in the mid-eighties. “There is a drop of blood behind every note I play and every word I write,” Paul Metsa says. And it’s easy to believe, as he conducts us on a musical journey across time and country, navigating switchbacks, detours, dead ends, and providing us the occasional glimpse of the promised land on the blue guitar highway.

His account captures the thrill of the Twin Cities when acts like the Replacements, Husker Dü, and Prince were remaking pop music. It takes us right onto the stages he shared with stars like Billy Bragg, Pete Seeger, and Bruce Springsteen. And it gives us a close-up, dizzying view of the roller-coaster ride that is the professional musician’s life, played out against the polarizing politics and intimate history of the past few decades of American culture. Written with a songwriter’s sense of detail and ear for poetry, Paul Metsa’s book conveys all the sweet absurdity, dry humor, and passion for the language of music that has made his story sing.

"The roads Paul Metsa has traveled are so fabled you might think, opening his book, that it would be a book of footnotes—the record of a man walking in other people's footsteps.  But Metsa brings every myth the roads carry down to earth, rewriting their stories in real time, returning the roads to real life, opening them up again to both past and future." —Greil Marcus

A Veteran Singer-Songwriter on the Trials and Joys of a Musician's Life
By Frank Beacham
I'm not a musician, but I love music and the people who make it. I especially like the little dive bar clubs--those tiny rock 'n roll dungeons where the genuine, real-life jams happen late at night after the paying crowd has left the building. Paul Metsa in "Blue Guitar Highway" takes you into these clubs and navigates through the ups and downs of a working musician's life. It is a mesmerizing journey in a real page-turner.

What's unique is Paul Metsa is not a household name. He's not a "famous" musician living a privileged "rock star" life. Yet, as you learn as the story unfolds, he has played with and for a virtual who's who of musicians at some of the top venues in the nation.

This is a guy who loves music and often lives gig to gig on minuscule paychecks, yet has a life that is rich with friendships, music, travel and remarkably colorful stories. His encounters with Minnesota's more famous song-writing wizard--Bob Dylan--are scattered throughout the book and many are hilarious. He's also a musician with balls, something that is illustrated clearly when he calls and goes to the hotel room of the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia after a gig to hand him a demo tape.

One of the things that kept me glued to Metsa's masterfully written narrative were the names of musicians he has played or worked with. So many--from Hubert Sumlin, Eric Weissberg and Scarlet Rivera to Louisiana Red, Honeyboy Edwards and Nappy Brown--I have known or had personal encounters with myself. As I read on, I was amazed by the constant connections Metsa makes with these familiar characters.

Paul Metsa nails the music scene with crisp, knowing prose. "American rock and roll started around a campfire in a dark and howling wind," he wrote. "It was blues, country and hillbilly music then. Once it was moved into four walls--juke joint or gin joint, rent party apartment, greased alley garage, or some full-moon Ozark barn dance--it became rock and roll.

"First, gut-bucket whiskey passed around in coffee cans, then ordered over the bar, smoke from hand-rolled cigarettes misting blue windows, both inviting the night and keeping it at bay, beautiful women writhing with imaginary lovers on sawdust dance floors, young men on a weekend pass from some hell-forbidden job doing the Hucklebuck and the Chicken Strut, these sons and daughters then joining in this Church of Saturday night together, while the band in the corner jacks it up, like drill hammers toward heaven, until the sweaty crowd tumbles out sanctified and satisfied."

As much as I like Metsa's writing about his life in music, his colorful family--and his super dog, Blackie--are also important elements to this story. Blackie, one of those instant attractions who senses his future owner at an animal shelter, started as a "problem dog" and managed to max out Metsa's new $5,000 credit limit card when he was hit by a car. From there, the story of Blackie is beautifully told as Metsa nurses him through surgery while tending to his own father, who was also healing from a serious illness.

When Blackie finally stood on all fours, unbowed by his trauma "like a canine Phoenix," Metsa wrote "a water pail couldn't have held my tears."

Then he continues: "Blackie's first paw-penned Christmas card described the whole story: price of adoption: $65. Price of emergency vet in Golden Valley: $1,400. Price of intensive care and surgery at the U of M vet hospital: $3,600. Price of having Minnesota's second best folksinger take me out at 6 a.m. and hold me up while I poop: priceless."

Metsa taps into one of the key reasons I like and respect musicians. These are people who--against all odds--create music out of thin air in a cruel world where "success" is normally measured by how much money a person makes. Anyone can learn to juggle financial deals in banks and on Wall Street, but it takes a special breed to survive and constantly make works of art in an environment where their talent is not celebrated or even recognized.

"The older I get, the more I am drawn to these kinds of men and women, tried-and-true American musicians, artists each and every one," Metsa wrote. "From the heartbeat in their mother's wombs, into a world that bounces us all around like pinballs, they became musicians because it was in their blood. They survived and prospered, not necessarily in terms of money but as beacons to guide the rest of us in troubled waters to that shore that we all call home."

Amen, brother!

The raconteur tells all like a favorite uncle returning from war, peace and travels.
By Chumley
Paul Metsa is that rare individual you meet in your life and you never forget. Here Paul writes about the life of a gig musician performer, the stories and the inspiration, when so many might give up on the dream, Paul soldiers on.

I saw someone place this book next to Richard's recent tome saying, 'one of these guys learned how to edit'. The pacing in Blue Guitar Highway is ideal for these quick trips through Paul's life and psyche. I must confess to knowing the guy for nearly two decades and I have been a fan ever since the first hello. A great performer, catchy original songs which seem to capture the ugly and beautiful truth of life at the same time. The man they all call when they want something for free and yet classy, sort of like how a used Tuxedo might get you an extra fifty bucks a night.

Paul makes you feel at home with his thoughts, three going on four decades of nightly gigs in clubs, dives, kitchens, basements, gardens and forty thousand seat stadiums has given him the golden thread that takes us into his deepest desires and shallowest thoughts as if it is coffee time on a Sunday morning. Like a dear friend telling tales of the great wide world around the campfire, we are lucky enough to live the musician's life through Paul Metsa and his journey. Touching the outer sanctum of the inner core of great musicians, we hear of conversations, parallel experiences and connections with the likes of Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Hubert Sumlin and even Jerry Garcia. Blue Guitar Highway is a personal tale, told by a raconteur, a bard, a sage of the road. Laced with surreal trips through the sixties, seventies and right through what will certainly be called the 'Lost Years', he is the ultimate guide down those alleys you know you should turn the other way from, but don't.

Almost quirky in the language, Metsa doesn't let you down, it will be on everyone's summer reading list next year, but if you are lucky enough to get this advance warning now is the time to read this verbose collection of tales, if you are like me, here in Minnesota, it's the perfect book to leave by the fire place and vicariously live the life of a blues man with a cup of cocoa, or coffee, or maybe a beer, or a whiskey. But never tequila.

I thought I knew a thing or two...
By SendInMaureen
I thought I knew a thing or two about the Minneapolis music scene until I read Paul Metsa's Blue Guitar Highway. It's a `tell all' in the best sense of the phrase. Lots of name-dropping of names and places, and that's one of the things I relish about it. It's a `who's who' of so many great musicians in the Twin Cities and the nation crossing many genres. And yes, of course I wanted to know who he was influenced by and connected with.

I fell in love with Metsa's music when I heard his song "Slow Justice" many years ago. As a lefty, I wanted to learn more about what made this guy tick. Now I know where he's from, how his family and hometown supported him, who he gravitated toward when he moved to the city, all his crazy escapades and why he's prone to cry when he talks about the people and the dog he loves. It's like he let us into his head and his heart.

About the writing... who knew the eclectic musician and performer could string together his thoughts with such eloquence right alongside a sneaky and clever wit. You can immediately tell he's well-read and has interests that reach far beyond songwriting. I was really entertained by his choice of words, turn of phrase, and a fun use of colorful language in just the right setting. So many lines simply took me by surprise. I wish I'd read it with a highlighter in hand.

Now when I hear his music, I appreciate it all the more. I got a peak at this complicated and very simple man. You can bet I'm going to listen closely to every new thing he writes.

Love in Vain: A Vision of Robert Johnson, by Alan Greenberg

Robert Johnson was undoubtedly the most outstanding of the Mississippi Delta blues musicians and also one of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but his short life remains steeped in mystery and wrapped in some of the most enduring legends of modern music. Love in Vain is Alan Greenberg’s remarkable, highly acclaimed, and genre-defying screenplay and is widely considered to be one of the foremost books on Robert Johnson’s life and legacy and an extraordinary exercise in American mythmaking. Newly revised and complete with extensive historical notes on Johnson’s life and the culture of the Mississippi Delta and blues music during the 1930s, Love in Vain is at once a classic of music writing and a screenplay whose reputation lies firmly in the realm of great American literature.

Amazon.com Review
His music has provided a prototype for several generations of blues and rock musicians, his songs remain current in countless new versions, and his own brief but astonishing output of recordings has earned gold records a half century after his death. Yet bluesman Robert Johnson remains among the most elusive figures in 20th-century art, the details of his life as shadowy as his music is brilliant. Johnson's personal obscurity makes the triumph of screenwriter Alan Greenberg's unfilmed script Love in Vain: A Vision of Robert Johnson all the more remarkable, as it weaves the slender factual threads of the musician's life into a haunting--and haunted--portrait that resonates with the history of blues itself.

Written in the early '80s, when blues scholarship was just beginning to unearth important new details about the life of the singer, guitarist, and songwriter, Greenberg's script follows the young Johnson from cotton field to juke joint as he pursued his muse. His abrupt transformation from a ham-fisted blues acolyte into a singer and guitarist of riveting intensity, famously rumored as a deal with the Devil, is inevitably a central plot development, and Greenberg honors both the factual evidence (the influence of guitarist Ike Zinnerman) and the Faustian explanation. Johnson's subsequent triumphs as a performer are laced together with the hardscrabble poetry of the songs themselves, as Greenberg uses blues lyrics to underscore the harsh realities of Mississippi Delta life.

Less obviously, Greenberg re-creates a world where telephones, automobiles, and phonographs coexist with conjurers, devils, and mojo hands. Johnson himself was a cryptic loner whose obsession with his music and immersion in it were paralleled by his descent into alcoholism. While invoking potent and pertinent dualities of sin and salvation (Johnson's early blues peers mirrored--and sometimes became--Bible-thumping preachers), Greenberg does not soften the hard price Johnson paid. His relentless womanizing is neither romantic nor particularly titillating; when the story reaches its inevitable conclusion, with the singer's death from poisoned whiskey, the moment is both tragic and squalid. --Sam Sutherland

Review

“Reads like a great American novel . . . The definite book of any kind on the gifted, eccentric blues legend.” —Pitchfork

“It’s about time.” —Bob Dylan

“Finally someone has captured the central feel of this master musician and his times, and that man is Alan Greenberg. Take my word for it.” —Keith Richards

“Magnificently rendered . . . This is no mere biopic. [Greenberg's] Johnson is a changeling, flesh-and-blood but mutable and secretive, and he dwells in a world of workaday magic, where his meeting with the devil takes place at the moviehouse in front of a western, and where Charlie Patton’s funeral turns into a ferocious soul-claiming contest between Johnson and the Rev. Sin-Killer Griffin. Greenberg not only evokes Johnson in a way that actually enlarges our view of him, he also depicts the blues world of the time, from Mississippi to Texas, in all its variegated splendor and misery.” —Luc Sante, New York Review of Books

“It may be the best movie you’ll see all year—even if it’s just inside your head.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Love in Vain has accomplished what I have tried to do for a long time: that is, to development screenplays as a new genre of literature which has its own natural right of existence.” —Werner Herzog

“The resonances of Robert Johnson’s mysterious life and equally mysterious death continue to echo through American music, from blues to country to rock to soul. Alan Greenberg has thoroughly researched and understood the facts of Robert Johnson’s career, but more importantly he has boldly and brilliantly reimagined the myth. Love in Vain is surreal in the original sense of the word; it transforms the reality of Robert Johnson, his time, his place and his art, into a super-reality—sharp and vivid yet as luminous and elusive as a dream.” —Robert Palmer, New York Times

“Love in Vain is a blazingly readable screenplay that I recommend without reservation.” —Greil Marcus

“A great, great screenplay.” —David Lynch

“Love in Vain is a masterpiece of historical significance.” —Memphis Commercial-Appeal

“Since facts about Robert Johnson are almost as hard to come by as facts about Shakespeare, Greenberg proposes to give flesh to myth instead . . . he makes it happen, too. Drenched in alcohol and bodily fluids, this is gut-bucket romanticism at its most credible. By imagining the Mississippi Delta's churches, shacks, cotton fields, and (especially) jooks so vividly, Greenberg helps us see and hear why blues buffs are obsessed with all that raunch and suffering transport.” —Robert Christgau

“A quantum leap of the imagination.” —Dave Marsh

“Wondrous and vivid.” —The Portland Tribune

“The really remarkable thing about Love in Vain is the way it plays off the mystery of Robert Johnson rather than attempt to penetrate it in literal terms. The screenplay represents the imaginative embodiment of a world, a world of myth and reality, both prosaic and poetic, a world in which Robert Johnson, or perhaps the idea of Robert Johnson, could spring up. I don’t think this milieu has ever been effectively portrayed before, and I consider it little short of a miracle that Alan Greenberg should have captured it so graphically, so colorfully, so dramatically.” —Peter Guralnick

It's a long way from the Mississippi Delta to Australia but this screenplay allowed me to visualise and feel the passion and raw edge to the music and landscape of Robert Johnson. It seems a shame that no Director has been brave enough to attempt to put this tale onto film as it could surely be an outstanding work if properly attacked. The comprehensive attached notes provide the reader with an opportunity to fill in any gaps in their knowledge to the point where one can almost picture the juke joints with their duelling musicians. The brutality of life in this community was shocking to me and the early death of Robert Johnson now seems to be less of a tragedy and more of an inevitability.

A neglected American masterpiece about a great fallen angel.
By A Customer
First released by Doubleday fifteen years ago, this humble trade paperback is as fine a literary
work as any published in our time. This neglected
American masterpiece about the great--and greatly
mysterious--fallen angel, 1930s blues genius Robert Johnson of Mississippi, is about to be transformed into a cinematic classic as well, directed by Martin Scorsese.

"This might be the best movie you'll see all
year--even if it's inside your head."
--Entertainment Weekly

Colorful Story, Good Details, Fun Read
By notentirely
For me, it was the "Notes" area that accompanies the 'script' that make this book highly recommendable. In fact, the information in the "Notes" is a fine read by itself!

The story of Johnson is part myth, part dream and occassionally part fact. This book/script is best when read as part of a larger look at Johnson and the Blues. In other words, read this - but don't stop here or you won't be getting the bigger picture.

Recommended for blues or Johnson fans. Worth the read.

Charming
By EA Solinas
Wizardry of any kind is enjoying a boom at the moment, and this includes the reappearance of the "Circle of Magic" series. This is the first book of six, a nice little series that I'd love to see in omnibus edition.
Randal is an ordinary squire in Doun until the day the wizard Madoc shows up. Without any clear reason why, Randal is attracted to the life of a wizard; a prophetic dream adds to this feeling. Madoc tries to warn him off, but Randal means it: He wants to be a wizard. Madoc finally takes him to the Schola, a wizards' school.
But learning magic and wizardry are not as easy as Randal thought. "Potential" does not mean that he will pass, and wizards are forbidden to kill, lie, or use a weapon. Randal finds it unbearably difficult to do even the most basic magic. He throws himself into his studies... but just as everything seems to be turning for the better, he finds himself face-to-face with a hideous threat.
Randal is the ideal hero for any kid who has struggled in school, not through lack of effort but from lack of understanding; he's smart, brave, gutsy, and sweet. He's supported by the enigmatic wanderer Madoc, his cheerful friend Nicholas, and the ragged musician Elys.
The older wizards are well-portrayed, being stern but kindly, strict but not rigid; the Schola is likewise, a place of great learning and magic, but also incredibly difficult to get through. Writing is very good as well; Doyle/Macdonald don't talk down to their readers, or dumb things down with the assumption that the kiddies can't handle anything more complex. They also put forth the neglected idea that just because you do badly at studies doesn't mean you're stupid, and that such things can be overcome more often than not.
Many authors can't pull off trying to tell a story in fragments of six, seven, eight small books. The end results are often poorly written and horribly characterized. Garth Nix can pull it off, and so can Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald. This book is both well-written and well-characterized, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I want the Whole series. . .
By A Customer
In 6th grade I read my first of the Circle of Magic books, the School of Wizardry. It started me into realm of fire breathing dragons, arrogant wizards, and gallant knights. Here I was hiding the book under my notebook at school, because even then I felt embarrassed at the size and childness of the book. The books have the reading level set at the age of 9-12 and because of this many might look over them. Though these books inspired me as a youth to explore the wide variety of literature out there, I feel it can do the same for ANYONE. Debra Doyle has found a way to reach out to ALL audiences. The publicity was down, so thence the sales. But the books themselves are magnificent. As I have not so forcibly made my younger brother read them, he has become a fan at the age of 14. As he checked them out of my old Junior High, I got the chance to read them once more as a Senior in High School. Of course this time I didn't have to hide them, but flaunted them as the occasion permitted. Now this review is quickly becoming unhelpful, but the point I am trying to put across is that these books appeal to ALL ages. I love them. On my list are classics like The Hobbit, A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court, and the Wheel Of Time series. But the circle of magic (though somewhat adolescent) stand out among the best. I can't think of another book I would rather have my children read in the future, and for anyone with the love of fantasy and imagination.

Good read!
By I.M. Gamer
I've read this whole series of books when I was much younger, from when Randal was first a squire in his kings court, to his adventures well beyond, I won't spoil it for you.
If you like fantasy books this is definetely a good read.
Randal starts out as a young squire in his kings court with his older brother Walter who is training to be a knight. Randal was dissatisfied with his potential future. When a master wizard visited the castle to give a display of some of magic's more flashier techniques, Randal ran away from home to pursue his life in magic, much to the dissatisfaction of his family. The author does a very good job at telling this tale.

An excellent attention grabber for the 2nd-6th grade group!
By Linda Price-Ahrendt
As a substitute teacher, I always need a quick time filler. Haunted Schools never leaves my book bag! I can bribe the students for hours with an "I'll read Red Rock Spirits" later if you are quiet. Once they hear one of the stories, they will do anything, yes anything, to hear another. I have been fascinating classes with this book for 3 years now. I have actually had students look me up over the summer to get me to read them the ending to a story if the bell rings before we finish. The stories are just creepy enough to be interesting, yet not enough to give nightmares to the littler ones. I always begin the telling by reading the introduction where Allan tells how the stories are really true....and of course we read them with the lights out! Attention all camp out leaders, teachers, sleepover planners, BUY THIS BOOK!

Useful tool before selecting curriculum
By Eleanor Siegrist
This book can be used to guide a church or school committee to select or create a curriculum that reflects their theology, ministry setting and resources. It can be applied to a particular program (VBS) or an entire scope and sequence from toddler to adult. It is a useful, maybe essential, resource for a pastor or church leader who has responsibility for leading a group which will make decisions about curriculum. Applying the principles in this book will help a church to avaoid purchasing curriculum material that looks good only to discove rthat it just "does not fit".

Review of Christian Educator's Guide to Evaluating and Developing Curriculum
By defunk
Before you can adequately evaluate a curriculum, it is important to know what your church values. Nancy Ferguson's book helps walk churches through this process. After completing the Six Keys, churches use this document to then assess available curriculum, modify curriculum if necessary, or to write their own. Our children's ministry team used Ferguson's material in 2010. I have already recommended this book to other children's pastors, and will continue to do so.
