About the Author
The Rev. Dr. James C. Perkins has served as senior pastor of Greater Christ Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan for twenty-five years. A nationally recognized minister, Dr. Perkins fulfills speaking engagements at churches, seminaries, and conferences across the United States, Africa, and Central America. Believing that the church has a responsibility to serve both the temporal as well as the spiritual needs of the surrounding community, Dr. Perkins has established numerous enterprises that support that vision including the Fellowship Nonprofit Housing Corporation and the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy.

Dr. Perkins is the author of Building Up Zion's Walls: Ministry for Empowering the African American Family (Judson Press 1999)

A Playbook For Life

According to Dr. James C. Perkins, the majority of African American boys do not realize their full potential because of two issues:
1) they live in an environment which is not conducive to learning during their early formative years and
2) they enter the sixth grade at a time when peer pressure dominates and corrodes the learning structure and promotes bad conduct. Based on the statistics these two issues can produce, Dr. Perkins has created the PLAYBOOK FOR CHRISTIAN MANHOOD: 12 Key Plays for Black Teen Boys. Within the 100 pages of this book, Dr. Perkins takes on the role of a life coach for African American males, between the ages 11 and 15, giving them a roadmap to follow into manhood.

Dr. Perkins relates to the young men in a language universal to most of them--football. He presents twelve strategies for young men to follow, which will lead them to a productive and spirit-filled life. The entire book has the feel and development of a playbook of football strategies. However, the game being played is the game of life. Each strategy, or play, comes from his years as a pastor and founder of the Benjamin E. Mays Male Academy and is supported by scripture. They cover the formation, the many obstacles, various routes by others to the same purpose and the ultimate goal line for each play to name a few.

The PLAYBOOK FOR CHRISTIAN MANHOOD provides a unique perspective and approach to achieving manhood for young Black boys using sound guidance. Dr. Perkins' advice is practical, easy to follow and provides room for note taking and observations. The writing is clear and concise, there is no room for misunderstanding and implementation can begin almost immediately in some cases. Although this book is recommended for use in youth organizations and churches, I can see where it can be used as a tool to help strengthen the father-son relationship or provide guidance for single mothers raising male children.

About the Author
W. Lloyd Warner (1898-1970 )was professor of social research at the University of Michigan and, before that, professor of anthropology and sociology at the University of Chicago. His research included studies of various communities including black communities in Chicago, a New England community (best known as Yankee City) and a Midwestern Community (Jonesville).

JAMES C. ABEGGLEN is Chairman of Asia Advisory Services and a Director of Learning Technologies, the Nippon Fund and Nikkei Science. He serves on the advisory committees of Grove International, Summitomo, Shoji and the American Management Association. A founding partner of the Boston Consulting Group, he established the first international consultancy in Japan for BCG in 1966. He started his own firm in 1984 as he assumed a professorship at Sophia University. He has spent more than thirty years in Japan as a management consultant and academic, and is now a Japanese citizen.

About the Author
The Rev. Dr. Ella P. Mitchell 񢇾-2008) was a teacher, preacher, devoted wife, mother and outstanding author. She is known as the "dean of Black women preachers." Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Mitchell graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where she met her husband Dr. Henry H. Mitchell, with whom she has ministered for over sixty years. Together, they have served as co- mentors in the Doctor of Ministry Program at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and were founders of the Ecumenical Center for Black Church Studies in Los Angeles. Dr. Ella was the first woman Dean of Sisters Chapel at Spelman College and also taught at the American Baptist Seminary of the West and the School of Theology at Claremont. Dr. Mitchell was the editor of five volumes of the series, Those Preaching Women, and, with her husband, completed their joint autobiography, Together for Good, which shares the secret to lasting love and friendship. In October of 2007 she celebrated her ninetieth birthday surrounded by family and friends on a birthday cruise.

This is an excellent book. Given the time, you could easily read it straight through. I carrry it with me and when standing or sitting in a long line begin reading where I left off. Each sermon is relevant to both men and women. Historically, black women called to preach have been shunned by the dominant male culture. What a great loss in a world where the work is plentiful but the harvesters few.

Challenging triumphal narratives of civic resiliency and universal recovery, the authors bring to the fore pitched battles over labor rights, gender and racial justice, gentrification, the development of city master plans, the demolition of public housing, policing, the privatization of public schools, and roiling tensions between tourism-based economic growth and neighborhood interests. The contributors also expand and deepen more conventional critiques of “disaster capitalism” to consider how the corporate mobilization of philanthropy and public good will are remaking New Orleans in profound and pernicious ways.

Neoliberal Deluge

I picked up this book looking for an accessible and informative primer on neoliberalism, and that is what I found. By focusing on New Orleans after Katrina, the authors included are able to demonstrate how neoliberalism passes through the private sector, volunteerism, and, of course, government actions. Most useful is the way that the authors highlight the difficult to define nature of neoliberalism by showing how different actions, even those that seem contradictory, can be folded into the neoliberal regime depending on the situation. While, I would agree with the other reviewer that this book is not meant for a casual, post-Harry Potter 7 read, this is easily one of the most engaging and accessible books on neoliberalism out there. Especially, if you don't hold a grudge because you were required to read it during a class.

I was required to read this for a sociology class. The stories behind this are great, but it is very much a textbook with stories that are complicated to follow. That being said, I wouldn't recommend this as a casual reading book.

Tracing the concept of political space from Greek and Roman philosophy to the post-9/11 period, Galli shows that the modern nation-state, in theory and practice, contains within it the conditions for both its own implosion (into totalitarianism) and explosion (as globalization). To move beyond this crisis, he argues, the logic of modern political space and the national boundaries that define it must be boldly reimagined.

Fun, but not enough "hard" data

I would say this book is written for the 9 - 13 year old group. It is fun to read with nice illustrations, and told in a story-like manner. The problem with that is that it seems very fictional. Why does the author suggest that this is how ancient Egyptians lived? There is not much information about what has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs which verify the author's claims.
Perhaps this is fine for children with a passing interest in the subject, but my 9 year old is very skeptical and wants to know WHY it's supposed that Egyptians trained housecats to hunt, for instance.
The language is simple enough for 9 year olds, and there is enough to read to make it interesting.

Excellent book for children

I borrowed this book from our local library to preview it before ordering it. The text is very readable and well written, providing many details that match the detailed illustrations(more on those in a minute). The text consists of about 3-4 paragraphs on each page with the majority of the page given to the illustrations. Also provided on many of the pages are captions explaining more detail in a couple of sentences. So for information content, I believe there is a great deal presented for the reader to absorb. The illustrations are the icing on the cake. Done by Angus McBride(whose name should be on the front cover as well) they are full of color and detail. The Egyptians look like they could step off the page and show an amazing amount of detail in their facial expressions, dress, even hairstyles. They look like humans unlike many depictions I have seen in other books.
I have spent a lot of time on the internet selecting books for us to use as we study at home. This one stands out above the rest and will be purchased while some of the other Ancient Egypt titles will be borrowed, studied, and returned to the library.
The good news is there are five other titles in this Growing Up series. If they are all done as well as this paperback edition, I will be tracking them all down for future use.
And for concerned parents, there is nothing that I would call objectionable in the illustrations or text.
Overall, a really well done book and one I highly recommend.

Even adults will learn something

There is so much information packed onto the pages of this childrens book you'll feel like you went to a seminar on Ancient Egypt. (Did you know that ancient Egyptian men had to pay alimony if they divorced their wives?)Not only is it well researched and well written it is also beautifully laid out and illustrated, I'll definitly buy more Troll books for my children.

Fascinating Synopsis of Fresh Material

To begin with, this text is one of the most ideologically jam packed essays that I have had the pleasure of reading in years. It oozes original content and terminology without force or pretention. The last time I was this excited about the list of sited references in a book, I was reading Understanding Media and having my mind equally as blown. This essay, and what I hope will be at least a series of expanded tomes on this intriguing subject, draws from eclectic works such as Dennis Wood’s Everything Sings: Maps for a Narrative Atlas and several forgotten or ignored fields, such as auditory archaeologists of the cityscape. The future of this extensive and encompassing field shows great promise and I hope that the Matterns of our time will be better received than the McLuhans of their time initially were.

Very interesting for an old book...

This book was published just as the F-14 was coming into service. for being a new, and supposedly "sensitive" design, the author has included a large amount of data which I thought would have been considered Top Secret.
The book goes into very technical detail about various systems on the (new) F-14A Tomcat. The weapons system and radar, the heart and soul of the F-14, are covered in great depth. In fact, most systems are covered in a good amount of detail.
Of interest is the analytical comparisons of the F-14 to other contemporary aircraft. This section alone makes the price worthwhile.
The only system which is brushed over is the problems with the finicky and tempermental TF-30 engines which have plagued the F-14 through it's entire career.
If you are a Tomcat buff, then this is a MUST HAVE in your library!

A trip back to 1975!

This book was published in 1975. At the time, the F-14 is brand new, just reaching the fleet and it is without a doubt the most advanced fighter ever created. All of the Tomcat's advantages over its predecessor (the F-4J) and its Soviet adversaries (MiG-23, -21, -19, at the time) are explained in detail including the bubble canopy, weapons system, and untouched maneuverability. All of the aircraft systems are explained in detail with extra emphasis placed on the functioning of the AWG-9 radar. Though the book is very old, it contains information not found in other books. It's a great old book if you can find it!

Good book for Tomcat fans

Stevenson has written a very detailed book given the time frame of writing, 1975. the information presented is first rate and detailed although dated.

I would like to see an updated edition given the drastic changes the F-14 has traversed since the A model. i would like to know more about the B and D mods with dispositions on the specific Bu number planes. Many have crashed or retired.

Enjoyed it and use it as reference for models.
