Reinventing Citizenship: Black Los Angeles, Korean Kawasaki, and Community Participation (Critical American Studies), by Kazuyo Tsuchiya

In the 1960s and 1970s, the United States and Japan went through massive welfare expansions that sparked debates about citizenship. At the heart of these disputes stood African Americans and Koreans. Reinventing Citizenship offers a comparative study of African American welfare activism in Los Angeles and Koreans’ campaigns for welfare rights in Kawasaki. In working-class and poor neighborhoods in both locations, African Americans and Koreans sought not only to be recognized as citizens but also to become legitimate constituting members of communities.

Local activists in Los Angeles and Kawasaki ardently challenged the welfare institutions. By creating opposition movements and voicing alternative visions of citizenship, African American leaders, Tsuchiya argues, turned Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty into a battle for equality. Koreans countered the city’s and the nation’s exclusionary policies and asserted their welfare rights. Tsuchiya’s work exemplifies transnational antiracist networking, showing how black religious leaders traveled to Japan to meet Christian Korean activists and to provide counsel for their own struggles.

Reinventing Citizenship reveals how race and citizenship transform as they cross countries and continents. By documenting the interconnected histories of African Americans and Koreans in Japan, Tsuchiya enables us to rethink present ideas of community and belonging.

Review
"This comparative study of community policies related to welfare and community participation is well organized, well writen, and well documented. The narrative moves along, not dwelling too long on one individual or organization, yet it also contains extremely apt quotations from policy makers and activists that vividly conveey their ideas. The attention to gender, female homemaker and male breadwinner, and contestations of that is equally efficient and well conceived, enriching the book. The influence of African Americans and their ideas on contestations over inclusion and welfare policies in Japan is equally compact and relevant." —Kathleen Uno, Temple University

"A fascinating addition to the literature on the War on Poverty."—Journal of American History

"Reinventing Citizenship leaves the reader with the opportunity to question how contemporary efforts to address poverty and economic inequality might resonate within a transnational context."—Law, Culture, and the Humanities Journal

"Reinventing Citizenship is important for exploring the little-known differences and similarities between black welfare activists in Los Angeles and their Korean counterparts in Japan, and for its rare demonstration of the transnational ties that bound them."—American Historical Review

"Reinventing Citizenship is a work of solid research, whose comparative approach compels readers to think about state welfare and social movements in the late 1900s globally and expansively, something Americanists should do more in general."—Pacific Historical Review

Excellent comparison that shows the unexpected connections between global struggles impacted by local movements that leap and cross-fertilize from country to country. Well researched. Best on Korean situation in Japan, but makes interesting points on USA.

Native identity is usually associated with a particular place. But what if that place is the ocean? Once Were Pacific explores this question as it considers how Māori and other Pacific peoples frame their connection to the ocean, to New Zealand, and to each other through various creative works. Māori scholar Alice Te Punga Somerville shows how and when Māori and other Pacific peoples articulate their ancestral history as migratory seafarers, drawing their identity not only from land but also from water.

Although Māori are ethnically Polynesian, and Aotearoa New Zealand is clearly a part of the Pacific region, in New Zealand the terms “Māori” and “Pacific” are colloquially applied to two distinct communities: Māori are Indigenous, and “Pacific” refers to migrant communities from elsewhere in the region. Asking how this distinction might blur historical and contemporary connections, Te Punga Somerville interrogates the relationship between indigeneity, migration, and diaspora, focusing on texts: poetry, fiction, theater, film, and music, viewed alongside historical instances of performance, journalism, and scholarship.

In this sustained treatment of the Māori diaspora, Te Punga Somerville provides the first critical analysis of relationships between Indigenous and migrant communities in New Zealand.

Twilight Rails: The Final Era of Railroad Building in the Midwest, by H. Roger Grant

By the start of the twentieth century railroads crisscrossed the nation, yet there were still those who believed that the railroad network in the United States was far from complete. Residents of small towns lacking rail access lobbied hard for steam and electric roads to serve their communities, and investors eagerly started new ventures that would fill the gaps in the railway map. While some of these roads enjoyed a degree of success, most of them were financial flops even before the rise of the highway system made them obsolete. In Twilight Rails, H. Roger Grant—one of the leading railroad historians working today—documents the stories of eight Midwestern carriers that appeared at the end of the railroad building craze. When historians have reflected on these “twilight” carriers, they have suggested that they were relevant only as examples of unwise business ventures. Grant finds that even the weakest railroads were important to the communities they served; the arrival of the railroad was cause for great celebration as residents were finally connected to the outside world. A railroad’s construction pumped money into local economies, farmers and manufacturers gained access to better markets, and the excitement generated by a new line often increased land values and inspired expansion of local businesses. Even the least financially successful carriers, Grant argues, managed to significantly improve their local economies. This thorough and highly accessible history provides a fascinating look at the motivations, accomplishments, and failures of the twilight carriers, granting a new breath of life to this neglected aspect of American railway history.

A good series of case studies on late midwestern railroad development
By Bill Hough
The University of Minnesota Press just published "Twilight Rails: The Final Era of Railroad Building in the Midwest" By H. Roger Grant. This 296-page hardcover (ISBN 978-0-8166-6562-4) is billed by the publisher as "The first book to document the final wave of railroad construction in the Midwest, written by a preeminent railroad historian."

The press release goes on to note that "H. Roger Grant is the Kathryn and Calhoun Lemon Professor of History at Clemson University and the author of numerous books on railroad history, including Erie Lackawanna: The Death of an American Railroad, 1938-1992; Follow the Flag: A History of the Wabash Railroad Company; and The North Western: A History of the Chicago & North Western Railway System." In his preface the author writes how the book grew out of earlier research on the Missouri, Arkansas & Gulf and Creston, Winterset & Des Moines railroads. He noticed similarities between these and other "twilight" railroads, which he defines as carriers born "late in the construction period" of railroads, generally the early decades on the 20th Century.

Grant begins the book with a 20-page introduction to the concept of "twilight railroads", discussing various examples and developing his major thesis which is that even the weakest railroads were important to the communities they served and "the arrival of the railroad was cause for great celebration as residents were finally connected to the outside world." Despite the fact that a majority of these railroads were financial failures, he concludes that "a railroad's construction pumped money into local economies, farmers and manufacturers gained access to better markets, and the excitement generated by a new line often increased land values and inspired expansion of local businesses." Even the least financially successful carriers, Grant argues, managed to significantly improve their local economies despite the fact that, in many occasions the railroad did not share in that prosperity.

After the introduction, we have 8 chapters that are generally 20-30 pages long. Each of these provides an in-depth look at a Midwest "twilight railroad." The railroads discussed in this book are little-known: Akron, Canton & Youngstown, Creston, Winterset & Des Moines, Detroit, Bay City & Western Railroad and Port Huron & Detroit Railroad [the "Handy Lines"], Electric Short Line Railway/Minnesota Western Railroad [the "Luce Line"], Ettrick & Northern, Illinois, Iowa & Minnesota Railway/Chicago, Milwaukee & Gary Railway [the "Rockford Route"], Missouri, Inland & Southern/Missouri, Arkansas & Gulf [the stillborn "Ozark Short Line"], and St. Joseph Valley. The research that Mr. Grant spent on this book is considerable; there are 27 pages of endnotes after the epilogue.

Although none of the railroads that Grant profiles exists today, the stories are quite different from one another. For example, the Arkansas & Gulf, despite some construction activity, never actually operated. The subject of Chapter 2, the Creston, Winterset & Des Moines was a marginal operation that lasted less than a decade. And although it lasted longer, Ettrick & Northern also didn't live up to expectations, ending in 1937. On the opposite end of the spectrum, however is Akron, Canton & Youngstown, 114 miles of which continues in service today with Wheeling & Lake Erie, a carrier featured in the July 2008 issue of Trains Magazine.

This is a professional-looking book with easy-to-read text that is properly laid out. The publisher does not use "ragged right" text except for the infrequent photo captions. However, the paper stock does not lend itself to good quality photo reproduction, which this reviewer can overlook because this book is not intended to be a photo book or an "illustrated history." Each chapter opens with a map of the railroad being discussed which is of paramount importance for readers unfamiliar with the geography. Additional maps and timetable reproductions are also provided as necessary.

Twilight Rails provides eight interesting case studies of railroads that appeared on the scene just as railroad construction was winding down and improved roads was leading to modal competition from trucks, buses and cars. The book will appeal to readers with an interest in early 20th century Midwestern history.

No vampires but great stories of little known railroads
By Gene Bowker
Say Twilight these days and most people instantly think of the blockbuster movie series about Vampires and Werewolves in the Pacific Northwest, but Twilight Rails by Clemson Professor H. Roger Grant is about the end of the railroad building in the US Midwest.

Twilight Rails: The Final Era of Railroad Building in the Midwest discusses eight railroads in the Midwest which were started in the 1900s, after the major lines were built. I say started because at least one of the railroads was never completed.

I found the most interesting chapter to be Chapter Seven "Ozark Short Line" about the Missouri, Arkansas & Gulf Railroad. It was projected from Rolla, Missouri on the Frisco Railroad to Houston, Missouri in South Central Missouri. This route was interesting because I used to live near Houston and I worked there when I just out of college. The railroad was plagued by a number of financial problems and bad timing and was never completed. Even when I lived there, I never heard anything about the MAG.

Another interesting Railroad was covered in Chapter Two: "Crazy Willie & Dandy Molly: The Creston, Winterset & Des Moines Railroad" which is located in Eastern Iowa. My wife and I were married near Winterset (which is the county seat of Madison County of Book and Movie Fame) so it was really interesting to read about the railroads of that region.

The entire book was a good read with lots of interesting illustrations and photos of these mostly unknown lines. Grant does a great job of combining information about equipment, routes, and services with stories about the people behind the railroads which can be just as interesting of a story.

I highly recommend "Twilight Rails: The Final Era of Railroad Building in the Midwest" which is published by the University of Minnesota Press who also have published a number of other interesting railroad books in the last few years.

Human Error: Species-Being and Media Machines (Posthumanities), by Dominic Pettman

What exactly is the human element separating humans from animals and machines? The common answers that immediately come to mind—like art, empathy, or technology—fall apart under close inspection. Dominic Pettman argues that it is a mistake to define such rigid distinctions in the first place, and the most decisive “human error” may be the ingrained impulse to understand ourselves primarily in contrast to our other worldly companions.
In Human Error, Pettman describes the three sides of the cybernetic triangle—human, animal, and machine—as a rubric for understanding key figures, texts, and sites where our species-being is either reinforced or challenged by our relationship to our own narcissistic technologies. Consequently, species-being has become a matter of specious-being, in which the idea of humanity is not only a case of mistaken identity but indeed the mistake of identity.  Human Error boldly insists on the necessity of relinquishing our anthropomorphism but also on the extreme difficulty of doing so, given how deeply this attitude is bound with all our other most cherished beliefs about forms of life.

Review

"This is a powerful account of human exceptionalism, narrated with the most enchanting of attentiveness to the texts being read. Dominic Pettman writes with such subtlety, wit, and imagination that every page of this book is a pleasure to think with." —Rey Chow, Duke University

"Reading this book is a seductively creaturely experience. Pettman combines impressive theoretical sophistication and pitch-perfect pop-cultural readings with a lightness of touch that pulls us in many unexpected directions and elicits many surprising feelings. A major contribution that maps a way past the all-too-human errors of the posthuman." —Hugh Raffles, author of Insectopedia

Have to wonder what the world could look like if parts of this book were age-appropriately adapted throughout the curriculum, a curriculum that acknowledged and encouraged engaging in the thinking this book invites.

Daydreaming aside, adults are lucky not to have to wait for an age-appropriate adaptation: we can just enjoy Pettman served fresh. Delicious!

Anyone interested in poking around in our notions about ourselves and our surroundings is likely to find themselves addicted to Pettman's writing.

I love the way theory is combined with references to sources that we all have easy access to. This not only engages one with the subject matter but also encourages a more critical "consumption" of everything our culture has to offer. Even the most Hollywood Hollywood blockbusters can now be enjoyed with the analyses of this book in mind.

Speculative Blackness: The Future of Race in Science Fiction, by André M. Carrington

In Speculative Blackness, André M. Carrington analyzes the highly racialized genre of speculative fiction—including science fiction, fantasy, and utopian works, along with their fan cultures—to illustrate the relationship between genre conventions in media and the meanings ascribed to blackness in the popular imagination.

Carrington’s argument about authorship, fandom, and race in a genre that has been both marginalized and celebrated offers a black perspective on iconic works of science fiction. He examines the career of actor Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed the character Uhura in the original Star Trek television series and later became a recruiter for NASA, and the spin-off series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, set on a space station commanded by a black captain. He recovers a pivotal but overlooked moment in 1950s science fiction fandom in which readers and writers of fanzines confronted issues of race by dealing with a fictitious black fan writer and questioning the relevance of race to his ostensible contributions to the 'zines. Carrington mines the productions of Marvel comics and the black-owned comics publisher Milestone Media, particularly the representations of black sexuality in its flagship title, Icon. He also interrogates online fan fiction about black British women in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Harry Potter series.

Throughout this nuanced analysis, Carrington theorizes the relationship between race and genre in cultural production, revealing new understandings of the significance of blackness in twentieth-century American literature and culture.

digital archives -- it’s an intelligent geekdom discussion salad bar
By Derek Lee McPhatter
If you’ve found your way to this title and actually are taking time to read any reviews, chances are this book is for you.

For fans of sci-fi, fantasy and related geekdoms – here’s a book that takes you seriously. Now Carrington doesn’t promise to get to every single Fandom subcategory, but you’ve got your Star Trek, Sci Fi Mags, Comic Books (Marvel and DC, well sort of DC), Harry Potter, novelizations, and Buffy Too – and those are just the touchstones. You’ve got letters, phantom fans, digital archives -- it’s an intelligent geekdom discussion salad bar.

For those most interested in Blackness, Af-Am Sudies and related literary fields – here’s a work that illuminates a broadening vision of “the black experience”. There’s good discussion here on a diverse constellation of texts, all of which intersect with “blackness” in fascinating ways. And in a similar turn, the frame Carrington builds here also can help “make meaning” out of flashes of the fantastic that pop up in canonized black lit – like Morrison and such.

For academics – I can’t claim to know how this book fits in the current winds of academic discourse, but it seems to me Carrington has laid out a successful argument for thinking about genre writ large -- Let’s take this category known as Speculative Fiction and this category known as Blackness, and admit that they have porous, contested, interrelated, contradictory definitions. And with this understanding as the anchor for the lens of inquiry, we go through close readings of a diverse cross-section of texts (and their material conditions of reception and production) that illuminate a world of SF that is much more astounding and engaging than what SF may seem to be at face value (i.e. just pulp.).

For me – as a black sci-fi writer – this book has laid out a useful frame for thinking about my own work, especially in relation to the broader SF Universe. It’s a context-setting text that successfully weaves together disparate elements of what it can mean to claim both blackness and SF.

So yes! Useful book. Lot’s of fascinating nuggets. And a productive frame for re-thinking and repurposing all sorts of creative and intellectual pursuits.

I am the author of the book _The Politics of ...
By George Gonzalez
I am the author of the book _The Politics of Star Trek: Justice, War, and the Future_ (2015). I note on page 2 "That Uhura had a minimal role in the show’s plots is neither here nor there – as a true racist stance would never afford a bridge officer position to an African-American. Also noteworthy is the fact that an African-American actor (in the original series) plays one of the Federation’s leading scientific minds (The Ultimate Computer 1968)."

Also, Carrington fails to discuss the _Star Trek: The Next Generation_ characters of Geordi Laforge; Worf; and Guinan (all played by African-American actors). "These characters are admirable – of the highest intelligence, fortitude, and integrity" (page 2).

Carrington makes the following unfounded, baseless claim: "Star Trek is a discovery narrative, imaginging a new age of exploration modeled on European colonial expeditions" (page 161). As I explain in _The Politics of Star Trek_ (chapter one), original series episodes are perhaps the most powerful and clear-throated critiques of empire and colonialism in all of popular culture: "Mirror, Mirror", "Arena", “Private Little War”, "A Piece of the Action", "The Paradise Syndrome", "Patterns of Force", "Friday's Child". All these episodes to one degree or another take aim at Western colonialism.

Firsting and Lasting: Writing Indians out of Existence in New England (Indigenous Americas), by Jean M. O'Brien

Across nineteenth-century New England, antiquarians and community leaders wrote hundreds of local histories about the founding and growth of their cities and towns. Ranging from pamphlets to multivolume treatments, these narratives shared a preoccupation with establishing the region as the cradle of an Anglo-Saxon nation and the center of a modern American culture. They also insisted, often in mournful tones, that New England’s original inhabitants, the Indians, had become extinct, even though many Indians still lived in the very towns being chronicled. In Firsting and Lasting, Jean M. O’Brien argues that local histories became a primary means by which European Americans asserted their own modernity while denying it to Indian peoples. Erasing and then memorializing Indian peoples also served a more pragmatic colonial goal: refuting Indian claims to land and rights. Drawing on more than six hundred local histories from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island written between 1820 and 1880, as well as censuses, monuments, and accounts of historical pageants and commemorations, O’Brien explores how these narratives inculcated the myth of Indian extinction, a myth that has stubbornly remained in the American consciousness. In order to convince themselves that the Indians had vanished despite their continued presence, O’Brien finds that local historians and their readers embraced notions of racial purity rooted in the century’s scientific racism and saw living Indians as “mixed” and therefore no longer truly Indian. Adaptation to modern life on the part of Indian peoples was used as further evidence of their demise. Indians did not—and have not—accepted this effacement, and O’Brien details how Indians have resisted their erasure through narratives of their own. These debates and the rich and surprising history uncovered in O’Brien’s work continue to have a profound influence on discourses about race and indigenous rights.

Impressive Analysis with Wide-Ranging Implications
By Hunter
When you first open up Firsting and Lasting, it feels momentarily overwhelming to begin the book with Jean O’Brien’s “Note on Sources.” O’Brien started with every (every!) local history produced between 1820 and 1880 of all of the towns and cities of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, and then supplemented this with pamphlets on local commemorations, Fourth of July celebrations, and more. This book is an impressive effort in terms of how many texts it encompasses, and O’Brien’s analysis is equally impressive. She does the work of figuring out how all of these historical narratives – many of which, she admits, have since been forgotten – helped form the origin story and definition of the United States as a nation. This is important and incredible work, and it’s brilliantly written.

O’Brien’s work in this book centers on an important contradiction: why did local texts in this period insist on the disappearance and extinction of Indigenous people in New England when they clearly continued to exist? As O’Brien writes, “romanticized constructions of generalized Indians doomed to disappear was one thing; it was quite another to contemplate the ‘extinction’ of Indian peoples who might instead have been your neighbors” (p. xiv). Following this contradiction, O’Brien’s book tracks the ways in which Indigenous people in New England were recognized as tribal nations, the ways that non-Indigenous people in New England refused or for some reason failed to recognized Indigenous peoples as Indigenous, and how this erasure was and is resisted by Indigenous people themselves.

O’Brien uses local histories of towns and cities in New England, many of which were produced by amateur historians for the United State’s centennial, to analyze the nature of this erasure. She tracks the ways in which these historians promoted claims of firsting (being the first civilized people to live on the land, among other ways in which texts claimed land as their own), replacing (practices and texts that argued that European settlers have rightfully taken over the land from Indigenous people), and lasting (the ways in which these texts remove or “purify” the landscape of Indians by relegating them to the past and denying them access to modernity). O’Brien concludes with resistance, or places in which this story of ‘firsting and lasting’ ruptures: where, for example, Indigenous people show up as invitees to ceremonies that also, simultaneously, mourn their extinction. She also describes the life story of William Apess and his work as an activist and intellectual, especially in the ways that he defined a political stance for a location in modernity for New England Indians.

This book is a vivid example of what it means to do history that is immediately relevant to the present. As a white person descended from settlers from New England, I recognized the narratives in this story immediately: while the names of these local historians have long since disappeared, the stories that they constructed that wrote “Indians out of existence in New England,” as O’Brien puts it in her subtitle, are stories that are told again and again in schools, in ‘living history’ sites, and in the monuments and memorials that nineteenth-century contemporaries built all over New England. O’Brien also makes a strong argument for the ways that these historians wrote these local histories as part of a growing anxiety about the declining importance of New England as the origin of the nation. This means that these histories, rather than being isolated events that pertain at most to the New England context, are actively working to be narratives defining the American nation.

In this way, O’Brien’s book provides an important contribution to broader fields of settler colonialism and decolonization. Others in this field have done important work defining how conceptions of nation and state are dependent on land and Indigeneity: Jodi Byrd, for example, in Transits of Empire tracks the ways that notions of indigeneity are employed in the expansion of empire and Aileen Moreton-Robinson, in The White Possessive, argues for the way that logics of possession are central to the ways that white first world states operate and practice their work. With Firsting and Lasting, O’Brien’s truly impressive (both in terms of her analysis as well as the vast amount of material that she explored) study does the work of figuring out some of the ways in which these notions of nation are enacted and reinforced by settlers on the ground, and how seemingly-inconsequential documents do the work of constructing the settler-colonial nation and legitimizing its existence on occupied land.

Most immediately, if you live in a settler-colonial nation like the United States or Canada, Firsting and Lasting will change the way that you look at your country and city. It’s impossible not to see the ways that this narrative is actively constructed and maintained by the nation and continues to be resisted by Indigenous people: it is apparent from the stories told in classrooms to the ongoing legal battles for Indigenous land claims and recognition at the governmental level. Many of the monuments in Canada and the US were built in the time period that she discusses, and their inscriptions tell the same story, implicated in it whether or not they speak of Indigenous people, in their arguments about “what counts as legitimate history, and who counts as legitimate peoples” (xviii). O’Brien’s book may use documents from the past as its text, but its subject matter is decidedly contemporary. When it comes down to it, this is an excellent book, and it should be widely read, for its relevance to history and to many other interdisciplinary fields.

That Other Reviewer Doesn't Get It
By Michael
Dr. O'Brien's analysis brilliantly demonstrates the way colonists--and the generations who followed them--used language to rhetorically place Native Americans continually on the cusp of extinction. To claim that O'Brien is not "objective" enough is to miss the now-mundane point that the writing of history is never "neutral," and that claims of neutrality are often used to serve those who have power. There is, I believe, a cliche about this: something about history being written by the victors. If I were to choose a single book to powerfully illustrate that truism, it very well might be O'Brien's.

From Library Journal
The provocative title of this fourth volume of the journals (e.g., At Your Own Risk, LJ 12/92) of the late British avant-garde filmmaker, artist, and gay activist suggests a look back in anger and defiance of the conventional. It is, but it is also rich in wit, intellect, and a clearly articulated aesthetic. Written while editing his film The Last of England (1987) and originally entitled that in Britain, this first American edition goes by the uncompromising title Jarman (1942-94) originally chose. Part memoir, part career retrospective, the journal is a collage, incorporating dryly moving personal reminiscences from childhood through the 1980s, glimpses of his filmmaking genius at work, and penetrating critiques of his own art and those of others, as well as vivid prose and poetry miniatures. Filled with startling verbal and photographic imagery, this book, like Jarman's films, may not appeal to every taste, but his importance as an artist and its own merits justify its inclusion in all film, art, and gay studies collections.?Richard Violette, Social Law Lib., Boston

From Kirkus Reviews
This impassioned and reflective final volume in the late avant-garde filmmaker's diaries articulately mixes personal recollections, travelogues, and interviews, plus a few fantastic vignettes thrown in. Written during the making of Jarman's apocalyptic antipatriotic film The Last of England, the journal more or less anchors itself on that work-in-progress, in contrast to the color schemes of Chroma (1995), the previous volume of diaries. This book shares much of the same subject matter with its predecessors: Jarman's esthetic perspective and artistic training as a painter, his struggle with his sexual identity and escapades during the sexual revolution, his opinions on the British cinema world and its reactions to his controversial films Caravaggio, The Tempest, et al. Filming The Last of England supplies this book with not only a thematic focus but also a sense of immediacy, as Jarman works out his film vision of an Albion wrecked by its own imperial identity. Unpacking the film's literary and visual allusions, he succinctly describes it as ``a dream allegory [where] the poet wakes in a visionary landscape.'' The most striking feature of the journal, however, is Jarman's bitter yet ruefully sympathetic portrait of his domineering father--``the classic fag's father''--a WW II bomb- squadron leader who embodies much of what his son detests in the English establishment and the military mentality. A keen amateur moviemaker, RAF officer Jarman took films of his bombing runs as well as his family during the war, which wound up in The Last of England as both nostalgia and ironic counterpoint. In a sense, Jarman points out, his father was equally betrayed by his country: Emigrating from New Zealand, he had to become more British than the British and fought an exhausting war only to go adrift in contemporary England. The rich, raw, kaleidoscopic finale of a personal and artistic statement. (100 b&w photos, not seen) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review
"The most engrossing book I’ve read in an age...It offers a back-room view of Jarman’s career as well as his musings on art and film...Jarman is the sort of troublemaking visionary who one day may be compared with Blake." —Time Out London

"Moving, poetic, inspirational." —New Musical Express

"The rich, raw, kaleidoscopic finale of a personal and artistic statement." —Kirkus

"Derek Jarman was a genius who, like the gay artists he admired, not only lived dangerously (that being queer) but created dangerous art. In this time when artistic cowardice (that being marketability) reigns, one would do well to read Kicking the Pricks." —Lambda Book Report

Straight Talk on the American Dream
By Dave (D.J.) Butler
This book, written in a punchy and engaging voice, is part memoir, part political diatribe and all truth.
The American Dream is out there, in reach of every American. You work hard, you take risks, you invest the time, the money, the training, and you make a good life for you and your family. This is the archetypal American Story, it is Ken Hamblin's story, and, as Ken fiercely argues, it is a common story. It can be your story.
Even if you're black, poor, and from a rough neighborhood.
In his explication of the American Dream, Hamblin particularly attacks those that would force black Americans to be victims, from the "black thugs" and the "brood mares" that demand ever-increasing entitlements that can only destroy their own lives and the vitality of their communities, to the "poverty pimps" and the "egg-sucking dog liberals" whose own power depends on telling the black underclass that they are doomed to failure and victimhood, the only salvation lying in voting for the politician who will bring back a bigger bite of the welfare apple.
Hamblin punches hard and talks straight, punctuating each chapter with correspondence -- both supporting and hateful -- he has received in response to his writings and radio show. Entertaining and informative.

This should be a must-read textbook for inner-city schools
By A Customer
Ken Hamblin is a first generation,self-made American. He does not use hyphens or letters to descibe himself. Instead,he calls himself colored or negro. In his book he illustrates the disservice done by liberals to blacks and other minorities in America. He points out the fact that the liberal's patrinization of minorities has done more harm than good because it fails to allow an individual to accept responsibility for their own actions. Ken Hamblin uses examples from his own experiences as a journalist. He also cites personal observations while traveling across America on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and in his airplane, of what he sees going on around him. Witty and at the same time hardhitting, he exposes the on-going liberal hypocrisy and how it rewards laziness, while simultaneously condemning achievement. He offers simple, easy to adopt solutions to this problem. He also prints comments from listeners of his syndicated radio program. America still works, the dream is still alive. The viewpoints are an American view. Very real, very informative, and very entertaining.

In Your Face Patriotism
By Steven Fantina
Compared to Ken Hamblin, Rush Limbaugh looks like a liberal, Laura Schlessinger is an advocate of sensitivity training, and Pat Buchanan sounds like a wishy-washy moderate with inchoate opinions. Hamblin is no fan of whiners constantly looking for a target to blame so they can dwell in their perpetual victim status. As a child of a welfare family, he brings strong credence to his condemnation of government handouts that enslave generations. He is not craven about attacking misguided multi-cultural mendacity that creates class warfare and demeans patriotism. Among his other beta noirs--loosened morality, anti-American sentiments, feel good education policies that shortchange students, the worship of self-esteem, and liberal politicians whose dumb policies do widespread harm to those they profess to be trying to help.
Besides his wise social commentary, Ken Hamblin is a captivating raconteur. Reading about his first visit to the isolated village of Atlantic City, Wyoming (NOT New Jersey) I saw the innumerable stars twinkling in the endless sky, and when he relates his solo scuba diving adventure in the eerie murkiness of Lake Powell, I felt myself actually wanting to come up for air.
Ken Hamblin is justified in boasting that he is living the American Dream. To achieve his goals he needed to surmount two kinds of racism. As a young man, many "whites-only" doors slammed in his face, and once he achieved his success he found many rigid liberals unwilling to accept a challenging black voice that did not hew to stereotypical standards.
My only complaint is that the book's subtitle "An Unassuming Colored Guy Speaks His Mind About America" contains a completely inappropriate word. Ken Hamblin is about as "unassuming" as a tsunami/earthquake combination.
