Looking anew at the "war on terror"; the development and application of U.S. policy; the construction and demonization of rogue states; events in Lebanon, Somalia, and Pakistan; and the wars continuing in Afghanistan and Iraq, Terror and Territory demonstrates how a critical geographical analysis, informed by political theory and history, can offer an urgently needed perspective on world events.

Very timely and substantive book!

I crept up to ordering Elden's book from Amazon. First, I borrowed it from another library through inter-library loan; then, I asked our university library to order it; finally, I decided I needed my own copy because it is a book I will dig into many times. Elden, with experience at Durham University's fine center that keeps track of boundary disputes, has tackled logical questions abuot sovereignty and territory in the day of a seemingly endless "war on terror". I happened to be reading it during the time the U.S. sent into Pakistan the group to eliminate bin Laden. It is Elden's thesis that sovereignty today is "contingent". Certainly the U.S. national security strategy under both Bush and Obama suggests that the U.S. views it as an unlimited right to take the military response to terrorists anywhere in the world. Elden has produced a fine book exploring this concept, written in a straightforward, well documented way that both acaedmic and general public audiences would find worthwhile. I highly recommend it.

One hundred years ago, architects found in the medium of photography—so good at representing a building’s lines and planes—a necessary way to promote their practices. It soon became apparent, however, that photography did more than reproduce what it depicted. It altered both subject and reception, as architecture in the twentieth century was enlisted as a form of mass communication.

Claire Zimmerman reveals how photography profoundly influenced architectural design in the past century, playing an instrumental role in the evolution of modern architecture. Her “picture anthropology” demonstrates how buildings changed irrevocably and substantially through their interaction with photography, beginning with the emergence of mass-printed photographically illustrated texts in Germany before World War II and concluding with the postwar age of commercial advertising. In taking up “photographic architecture,” Zimmerman considers two interconnected topics: first, architectural photography and its circulation; and second, the impact of photography on architectural design. She describes how architectural photographic protocols developed in Germany in the early twentieth century, expanded significantly in the wartime and postwar diaspora, and accelerated dramatically with the advent of postmodernism.

In modern architecture, she argues, how buildings looked and how photographs made them look overlapped in consequential ways. In architecture and photography, the modernist concepts that were visible to the largest number over the widest terrain with the greatest clarity carried the day. This richly illustrated work shows, for the first time, how new ideas and new buildings arose from the interplay of photography and architecture—transforming how we see the world and how we act on it.

About the Author
A professor of reconciliation studies at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Previously, DeYoung has served in urban multicultural settings as the president of the Twin Cities Urban Reconciliation Network (TURN), executive director of the City Gate Project, and pastor of multiracial congregations. Internationally, DeYoung speaks on the topics of reconciliation and the multiculturalism of the Bible. Coming Together in the 21st Century is his sixth book.

Outstanding book. Biblically sound and historically true. Challenging and convicting. Caused me to think seriously about my own racial biases and prejudice. A book that needs to be read by anyone who cares about the future of the church and the unity of our nation.

Opens our eyes

It is common in scriptures for God's people to misunderstand their neighbors -- so, for example, Jeremiah has to instruct the exiles to care about Babylon neighborhoods and Paul leads the church's engagement with Mediterranean cultures (and needs to face down Peter to do it). DeYoung cares about how Euro-American eyes can be prone to misunderstandings concerning other cultures -- and he believes in the power of God's Word to convert us. These Bible stories, and DeYoung's savvy connections with America's cultures, provide a rich set of resources for the diversity we need in our diverse society.

Save your money!

If you have to read this book for any other reason than a class you are taking DONT! If it is for a class consider taking a lower grade and saving yourself a great deal of grief.

The stated purpose of the book is to break down how Christianity has been used to oppress others and has become nothing more than a "white man's religion." While some of the authors statements are true, this book does nothing to bring people together, instead it simply shifts the ability to oppress from one group to another and has little to do with bringing people together.

The book’s case studies include the conversion of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal into a wildlife refuge, a project that draws on a green “creation story” to sanitize other histories of the site; the cleanup and management of the former plutonium factory Rocky Flats, where the supposed transfiguration of waste into wilderness allows the government to reduce the area it must manage; and a federal law intended to compensate ill nuclear bomb workers that has sometimes done more to benefit former weapons complexes.

Detecting and exposing such “hot spots” of contamination, in part by satirizing government reports, Hot Spotter’s Report seeks to cultivate irreverence, controversy, coalitional possibility, and ethical responses. The result is a darkly humorous but serious and powerful challenge to the biopolitics of war.

Brad Berglund directs Illuminated Journeys, an ecumenical ministry devoted to deepening the spiritual life of individuals and churches. He is a spiritual director and leads worship renewal workshops, retreats, and pilgrimage tours around the world. Brad has been a pastor, church musician, and worship leader for over twenty years. He lives in Denver, Colorado, with his wife, Rita, and their two children, Brandon and Brianna.

This new entry on the expanding shelf of books on worship seeks to provide inspiration and practical resources for those who regularly lead worship. Drawing on a wide range of traditions and practices, author Berglund hopes to support readers "in breathing life into your weekly ritual" (p. xvii).
He brings seven assumptions to the subject at hand (pp. xvii-xviii):
1. Worship should be offered to God as worship, not as evangelism or Christian education.
2. Worship is what worshipers do for God.
3. Worship leaders are not performers but prompters of those in the pew.
4. Worship can transform our lives and make us more faithful.
5. Worship should activate our whole self, including our bodies.
6. God-centered worship expands our souls.
7. Worship is a weekly mini pilgrimage, an adventure into the unknown.
Robert Webbers emphasis on the fourfold movement of worship (gathering of the people, service of the Word, responding in gratitude, going out to serve) gives Berglund's handbook its structure, augmented by prelude and postlude.
Each section expands on one of the assumptions and offers practical suggestions for worshipers and worship leaders alike. Berglund~ years of experience as a pastor and worship leader, supported by an undergraduate degree in music and training for spiritual direction, contribute depth and breadth to his understanding. He addresses the stresses and storms surrounding worship today.
In one of the most valuable portions of the book, "The Modulating Church," the author tackles the challenges of bringing a key change in worship to the congregation. His well-considered suggestions correct some of the market-mentality aberrations that afflict churches today. "Is the motto of the church The customer is always right'? Worshipers are not clients. Churches are in the business of creating a new heaven and a new earth, not satisfying shareholders" (p. 91).
For a brief but current and comprehensive guide for those leading worship, one would be hard put to find anything more accessible and usable than this book. It has, in this reviewer's mind, only a couple of relatively minor flaws. An index would add to its usefulness. On page 8 the author employs a highly dubious etymology for the word innovate. To relate it to ovary/ovum--and therefore to fertility and birth--rather than to novum is a bit of a stretch.

Glorious Creativity

Brad Berglund has written an extraordinary book. A man for whom creativity is obviously a part of his soul, he shares ideas that make worship come alive in the local church setting. A man whose stories prove he has searched his own soul, he places his ideas in the context of profound human experience -- sorrowful, tragic and humorous.
The book brings focus and meaning to worship. Berglund has obviously reflected deeply on the nature and meaning of worship and gently guides the reader into his deep understanding of his topic. He opens doors of whose existence most people are unaware, and then he makes walking through them as safe and comfortable as coming home.
Obviously, this man loves worship and loves people. Every page glows with enthusiasm for life and for his topic. His book, both simple and direct, is a joy to read because of its compactness, clarity and ready applicability.
Drawing from a wide variety of traditions, he covers every aspect of worship. He shares more ideas than any church could apply in several years. The fun is in choosing which ideas serve your congregation best. An added benefit is the listing of other resources that he names throughout the text.
This is a book first to read and then to reference again and again.

In 1961, reacting to U.S. government plans to survey, design, and build fallout shelters, the president of the American Institute of Architects, Philip Will, told the organization’s members that “all practicing architects should prepare themselves to render this vital service to the nation and to their clients.” In an era of nuclear weapons, he argued, architectural expertise could “preserve us from decimation.”
In Fallout Shelter, David Monteyne traces the partnership that developed between architects and civil defense authorities during the 1950s and 1960s. Officials in the federal government tasked with protecting American citizens and communities in the event of a nuclear attack relied on architects and urban planners to demonstrate the importance and efficacy of both purpose-built and ad hoc fallout shelters. For architects who participated in this federal effort, their involvement in the national security apparatus granted them expert status in the Cold War. Neither the civil defense bureaucracy nor the architectural profession was monolithic, however, and Monteyne shows that architecture for civil defense was a contested and often inconsistent project, reflecting specific assumptions about race, gender, class, and power.
Despite official rhetoric, civil defense planning in the United States was, ultimately, a failure due to a lack of federal funding, contradictions and ambiguities in fallout shelter design, and growing resistance to its political and cultural implications. Yet the partnership between architecture and civil defense, Monteyne argues, helped guide professional design practice and influenced the perception and use of urban and suburban spaces. One result was a much-maligned bunker architecture, which was not so much a particular style as a philosophy of building and urbanism that shifted focus from nuclear annihilation to urban unrest.

More opinion than fact in some cases

While the book does contain some enjoyable design descriptions, background materials, and good illustrations, I was disappointed by what I saw as the author's frequent attempts to promote his own opinions about the fallout shelter and Civil Defense programs, rather than just inform. I was further troubled that some of his statements or conclusions seemed more like revisionist history rather than historical fact. Finally, the quote on the back cover that fallout shelters are a peculiar manifestation of the US response to the Cold War is flatly false, as the Soviet Union and their satellite states had a huge fallout shelter program that included hardened civilian shelters that surpassed US civilian shelters in terms of design and numbers: the Warsaw Pact nations built blast resistant civilian shelters with pre-installed lighting, bunks, water tanks, standby generators, and decon showers, where America's largely unhardened civilian shelters had plastic bags holding water in waxed cardboard barrels and crude chemical toilet barrels. The author totally failed to touch on important aspects such as ventilation and heat load issues or the means to deal with them, such as PVK's (packaged ventilation kits), the single or tandem stationary-bicycle driven fans that were intended to ventilate shelter space.
