Many grand estates that once spread out over hundreds of acres along the shores of Lake Minnetonka are also gone. The greatest of these lost houses often had astonishingly short lives: the lavish Charles Gates mansion in Minneapolis survived only nineteen years, and Norman Kittson’s sprawling castle on the site of the St. Paul Cathedral stood for barely more than two decades. Railroad and freeway building, commercial and institutional expansion, fires, and financial disasters all claimed their share of mansions; others succumbed to their own extravagance, becoming too costly to maintain once their original owners died.

The stories of these grand houses are, above all else, the stories of those who built and lived in them—from the fantastic saga of Marion Savage to the continent-spanning conquests of James J. Hill, to the all-but-forgotten tragedy of Olaf Searle, a poor immigrant turned millionaire who found and lost a dream in the middle of Lake Minnetonka. These and many other mansion builders poured all their dreams, desires, and obsessions into extravagant homes designed to display wealth and solidify social status in a culture of ever-fluctuating class distinctions.

Larry Millett is an architectural historian and the author of Lost Twin Cities,Twin Cities Then and Now, and AIA Guide to the Twin Cities. He has also written six mystery novels featuring Sherlock Holmes, all but one of them set in Minnesota. He lives in St. Paul.

Perfect coffee table book

My brother in law saw an article about this book in our local news paper. It was on his Christmas wish list so I bought it for him. When it came in the mail, I couldn't put it down. I ended up ordering another to keep for myself. A wonderful coffee table book, for sure.

If you can appreciate incredable homes of the 1880's -1920's, this book will break your heart.

The photos collected in this book are awe inspiring, informative, but sadly morose. To know and see that these houses once stood in the Twin Cities, but only to be demolished is a travesty. These houses went by the way of the wrecking ball, but to have that monstrosity of stainless steel to remain standing at the U of M on Washington Ave. puts into perspective of what is wrong in this world. Share this book with all like-minded-people (i.e. taste for beauty). Only a brilliant mind could draw-up such incredible lavishing mansions and highly skilled hands could build that very same mansion. It's hard to believe that these houses once stood. I'm glad to have purchased this book.

Much of the work centers on the onset of stuttering in children and underlies the theory that stuttering begins with the hearer rather than the speaker. Interrelationships between personality and stuttering have been investigated, a search has been made for a possible physical basis for stuttering, conditions affecting severity of stuttering have been studied, and research on therapy has been attempted.

This is an important book for psychologists, educators, social workers, physicians, parents, and others concerned with speech disorders. For those who devote their full effort to the problems discussed—the specialists in speech pathology and therapy—the book is essential.

The best resource available for nothern gardners!

The best resource I have ever seen detailing the different perennials, how and where to plant, propagation, attractive flower companions and more. The authors detail each plant and provide a list of varities with their recomendations listed in a five star rating system. I have been a serious gardner for 10 years and I have learned more from this book than any other source!

A incomplete book with a lot of filler

While perhaps suitable for a beginning gardener, this book omits many useful and common species while including obscure cultivars that are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Important cultural facts are often missing or buried in the cookie-cutter approach to each species. This book has no index, the omission of which may point to hasty editing. More experienced gardeners should look at books written by Steven Still.

Best book for perennials in the Midwest

I've bought and borrowed numerous books regarding perennials. None has been so complete and well illustrated. Each plant species has varieties listed as well as planting, mulching, pruning, dividing techniques and advice. As an avid perennial gardener, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Kudos to the authors!

"Growing up in Viking Times" describes daily life in Iceland during the Dark and Middle Ages. The text is simple and puts out the basic facts. The product description describes this book as being suitable for children from 9-12 years of age. Having read it, I think it is more suitable for your children between the ages of 6-9. What makes this book worthwhile are the wonderful illustrations by Angus McBride. The detailed illustrations do a great job of bringing the past back to life. However, if you are looking for more substantive, look elsewhere.

Great introduction to Native American Sign Language.

As a western writer, I try to make everything as authentic as possible. I wanted to add this to my list of reference books. It shows the way the basic signs were made in a way that allows me to include the discriptions in my story. My only problem with the book is the fact that it seems to only touch the surface of this interesting "language." This would be a great primmer for a boy scout project.

Historical Errors in the Illustrations
By The Truth Out
A friend who was born in the People's Republic of China, with a degree in Chinese Art history questions the historical authenticity of many illustrations in this book. In many scenic compositions, the artist has put together people wearing costumes, hair styles, and various embellishments that come from time periods that are too far apart with very distinguishable differences in styles. Discrepancies include furniture design that could not have existed at the time period represented by the costume of the person sitting on it. Some details, i.e. the way that writing implements are held, are a dead giveaway of the lack of Chinese Art history consultations for this book. So now we must ask, "How reliable are the visual information in the other books in this series?" Visuals can have a very powerful impact upon readers, thus, editors must do a better job of safeguarding what "reality" is presented to students in their "history" books. Without feedback from my Chinese friend, I would have just marvelled at the beautiful pictures in this book, and believed everything I saw.

A fresh perspective on the American city and how women interact with it

This is a very fascinating book which opens up a whole new way of looking at the American city and how women interact with it. I used the book for a research paper for a graduate university class (the history of popular culture) and I found it very useful and interesting. The focus of this book is on the upper-middle class but I think it would be a good read for anybody who is interested in city life and how women of different classes and ethnicities historically are able to use the public space. The author draws on many sources to create her narrative - I especially enjoyed the research that Sewell had done on ethnic newspapers in San Francisco. All in all, a great book which offers a fresh perspective. As a woman of today, it is interesting to see how women navigated the city in the old days and how women were far from able to go everywhere by themselves.

A fun book for both parent and child

My son absolutely loves this book and I have fun reading it to him. If you liked "Can I have a Stegosaurus?" you will love this new book. It is the perfect book for dinosaur lovers. The illustrations are great too. I highly recommend this book for children aged 3+.

falls well short of expectations

My daughter and I love the first so we were expecting more of the same. Unfortunately, this falls quite a bit short of expectations. The illustrations aren't up to the level of "Mom, can I ..." and the text seems somewhat forced and doesn't flow as well as the first. The ending leaves an opening for a sequel although, personally, I wish I had stopped after "Mom, can I have a Stegasorus".

Can I Have a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dad picks up the wonderful story begun in Can I Have a Stegosaurus, Mom. In this new adventure, the little boy imagines how great life would be if he only had a T-Rex as a pet. One of our family's favorites and highly recommended.
