Gr 6-9-Basketball-great Frazier is trading on his name and fame to encourage kids to love words. He leads off with a delightful short essay entitled "How I Started Loving Words," in which he describes his own attempts as a novice sportscaster to become articulate in two-minute increments. The introduction, "How to Use This Book," is a veritable lesson plan in how to talk to young people. The text consists of 13 brief, lively pieces, each spotlighting 10 to 12 "power words." Pronunciations and definitions are provided, using basketball terminology and frenetic fonts and graphics to provide grammatical information, such as "Fast-break Facts" and synonyms. The written pieces include humorous tales, opinion pieces, letters to the editor, diary entries, short scripts, and other kid-friendly examples of various forms of writing. Verbs that sound and feel exciting (swagger, jostle, lurk), adjectives (cacophonous, disheveled, succinct), nouns (indignation, labyrinth, boon), and adverbs (inadvertently, zealously) were effectively chosen and are utilized in the texts, and elaboration includes interesting derivations and lively plays on (and with) words. There might be difficulty finding a niche for this volume, as the kids in most need of it are not apt to check it out, but with a little encouragement it could find its way into the right hands and be quite effective indeed.

About the Author
When Walt "Clyde" Frazier retired from the NBA, he had an exciting new dream -- to become a sports broadcaster. Walt knew he needed the magic of words to reach his goal. So he pumped up his vocabulary every day, searching through dictionaries and building lists of useful words.
As Walt remembers, "I discovered that words are like people. Each word conveys a different meaning and has a different personality. Some words can make you feel sad, while others lift you up. The more words you know, the more you can sparkle and show your stuff."

This is one of those unusual books that is both a pleasure to read and educational. NBA Hall of Famer and TV broadcaster Walt Frazier has an inspiring message to tell about how the power of words can help anyone achieve their goals. Delightful artwork and more than 100 powerful words and the stories behind each one. Highly recommended.
