Kindergarten-Grade 2-As her father tucks Lisa in, he reminds her that her mother will be home "at the crack of dawn," but the preschooler is too young to understand the idiom. She goes to her older brother for help, but he makes it sound more like the crack of doom, and frightens the poor child. Waking before dawn, after a restless night, Lisa goes outdoors with a tube of glue hoping to fix the crack, but of course she can't find it. Instead, she witnesses a glorious desert sunrise, and immediately afterwards her mother drives up and they have a happy reunion. Young children who are very literal minded often have a hard time understanding colloquialisms, so this should strike a chord with them. The expressive, impressionistic, pastel illustrations capture the story's varying moods, although in a few places the text doesn't show clearly against the darker backgrounds. In all, this is a pleasant family story.
