About the Author
Vidar Sundstøl is the author of seven novels, including the internationally best-selling Minnesota Trilogy, whose first two volumes, The Land of Dreams and Only the Dead, are published by the University of Minnesota Press.
Tiina Nunnally has translated more than sixty works of fiction from the Nordic languages, including Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter, which won the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize. She has translated all three volumes of the Minnesota Trilogy.

The Needed Conclusion

The Ravens marks the completion of Sundstol's Minnesota Trilogy which began with The Land of Dreams, followed by Only the Dead. Here the multiple story lines begun in the first book find their end: solution to the murder of the Norwegian tourist, solution to the tangled Hansen family situation, even some clarification of the generations long legends surrounding both the Norwegian and Ojibwe ancestors.
Along they way there are more moody and, at times, beautiful descriptions of the Lake Superior area, the almost mystical landscape. The plot takes multiple twists and turns as Lance Hansen follows his twisted path to find the truth. And this may be the weakness of the book---the path becomes just too long and twisted with the focus on Lance's inner turmoil perhaps lasting too long.
Overall, I am glad I read this series and would read more from this author but I could see this having been written in two parts with a reduction in some of Lance's personal story (though perhaps that has to be there as a reflection of his family and the immigrants' difficult past.)

Great Start and Dissapointing Endings

The first book tricked me into reading the other two. The second was ungodly slow and not really about crime though I enjoyed it because I had just finished a semester and was burnt out and a long slow novel was just what I wanted. I kept putting down the third book. In fact I stowed it in my car to read when I was waiting for whatever. The story just dried up. Although the environs and the history of the setting did keep me interested, at some point I want a plot I care about and faster resolutions to single personal conflicts than this series wanted to provide. I don't like my brother either and never will, I don't want to spend 900 pages with a guy who just wallows around in that single spot without coming to a solid conclusion about it. I read in part because books do come to conclusions you cannot reach in real life.

No Rave for The Ravens

As a "trilogy" this novel was tediously repetitious and consequently hard on this reader's patience. It had an excellent translator, but needed an editor to match. Evidently the publisher's desire to cash in, along the lines of the Stieg Larsson "Dragon Tattoo" series, resulted in the padding of a small story into a saga. Trimmed of fat down to a single, albeit large, volume, it would merit 3 or possibly 4 stars.
