Considered by some to be Budd Schulberg’s masterpiece, The Disenchanted tells the tragic story of Manley Halliday, a fabulously successful writer during the 1920s—a golden figure in a golden age—who by the late 1930s is forgotten by the literary establishment, living in Hollywood and writing for the film industry. Halliday is hired to work on a screenplay with a young writer in his twenties named Shep, who is desperate for success and idolizes Halliday. The two are sent to New York City, where a few drinks on the plane begin an epic disintegration on the part of Halliday due to the forces of alcoholism he is heroically fighting against and the powerful draw of memory and happier times. Based in part on a real-life and ill-fated writing assignment between the author and F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1939, Schulberg’s novel is at its heart a masterful depiction of Manley Halliday—at times bitter, at others sympathetic and utterly sorrowful—and The Disenchanted stands as one of the most compelling and emotional evocations of generational disillusionment and fallen American stardom.

Review
"[Halliday] will haunt the imagination of all who have the good fortune to be coming, for the first time, to this remarkable novel." —Anthony Burgess
"A living, breathing portrait so vivid you forget who sat for it . . . so valid esthetically that it transcends its corporeal origin and becomes at last a naked, tormented image of that rarely beheld being, a man." —James M. Cain, New York Times
"As Fitzgeraldian as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Halliday is the very essence of ‘the lost generation.’" —Library Journal

Great in its guts
By Maris Roze
This fictionalized account of an actual encounter between the young Budd Schulberg and a past-his-prime Scott Fitzgerald rises above the level of a biographical/autobiographical recounting of the general facts of Fitzgerald's rise and very fallen condition by the time the author meets him. Schulberg infuses the general story of Scott and Zelda's meeting and riotous life together, and their inevitable crack-up (in F's own term), with wonderfully precise and painterly detail that makes a good story out of the facts already known to the reader. I'd give it 5 stars except for the lack of a broader frame for this intense focus on all the self-destructive stuff.

Fictionalized biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald
By Ronald F. Payne
Knowing that the charactor of Manley Halliday is a fictionalized F. Scott Fitzgerald makes this sad story a compelling read.
Shep (a fictionalized Budd Schulberg) a young screenwriter in late 30's Hollywood is assigned the middle-aged Manley Halliday, one of the superstar novelists and short story writers of the 20's (a thinly disguised F. Scott Fitzgerald) to produce a screenplay for a college campus comedy. Shep is at first hero-worshipful, but his hero, Halliday, ill and alcoholic, is constantly caught up in trying to come to terms with the loss of his "enchanted" past--his glory days of success and romance with the love of his life, Jere (Zelda Fitzgerald). All of the usual "Old Hollywood" chiches are touched on (especially in the satiric portrait of Studio Boss, Victor Milgrim), but, given the fact the Schulberg and Fitzgerald were, indeed, colloborators on such a screenplay, and both were, indeed, fired, makes me think the these "cliches" are pretty close to how it actually was.
I read this right after re-reading "The Great Gatzby", which made "The Disenchanted" more powerful than it would be if you didn't have a fresh experience of Fitzgerald as writer.

Extremely moving novel of disenchantment
By TGATO
Wonderful book! Themes of ambition and disillusionment are highlighted in this fictionalized account of the author's collaboration on a screenplay with F. Scott Fitzgerald when the author was at the start of his career and Fitzgerald's was in steep decline, but the story is much larger than that. It has a strong narrative arc, catchy dialogue and extremely well drawn characters who reveal themselves as the story unfolds.
