Gr. 3-5. These compact volumes will be useful for students needing those ever-popular sourcebooks for reports (no encyclopedias allowed). All the books in this new Growing Up in Ancient Times series deal with ancient civilizations, but the hook is the focus on each society's young people. The books cover all the important topics: customs, schooling, family life, food, clothing, etc., but from a young person's perspective. The artwork is similar to that usually found in series books of this type, realistic and filled with detail. While the art itself is good, the reproductions, at least in the paperback volumes (hardcover not seen), are washed out. Though there's nothing very special here, the price, especially for the paperbacks, makes these appealing additions that can be purchased for classrooms as well as libraries. Ilene Cooper

As a teacher, I found this book not only inspiring but educational too. Children will learn about the history of China while listening to a realistic story of ancient China. This is a must for educators, students, and parents!

Historical Errors in the Illustrations

A friend who was born in the People's Republic of China, with a degree in Chinese Art history questions the historical authenticity of many illustrations in this book. In many scenic compositions, the artist has put together people wearing costumes, hair styles, and various embellishments that come from time periods that are too far apart with very distinguishable differences in styles. Discrepancies include furniture design that could not have existed at the time period represented by the costume of the person sitting on it. Some details, i.e. the way that writing implements are held, are a dead giveaway of the lack of Chinese Art history consultations for this book. So now we must ask, "How reliable are the visual information in the other books in this series?" Visuals can have a very powerful impact upon readers, thus, editors must do a better job of safeguarding what "reality" is presented to students in their "history" books. Without feedback from my Chinese friend, I would have just marvelled at the beautiful pictures in this book, and believed everything I saw.

My daughter will be eight next month and she was bored with this book. It has some interesting facts, but it did not keep her interest at all.
