Japanese Army Air Force Camouflage and Markings World War II

When this book appeared in 1968, it set the standard for other books to follow. At that time there was not much published about Japanese planes in English, and this book gave an excellent overview of most of the planes used by the JAAF, plus their camouflage and markings, which untill then was an unknown area outside of Japan itself. For todays's standards the 'aircraft in profile' section might leave something to be desired, at the time of publishing there was only one way to get more material; buy each and every of the "Aircraft in Profile"series about Japanese planes and each every Osprey/Aircam about Japanese planes as well, a rather costly excercise and also quite time-consuming. Together with the companion volume "Japanese Naval Air Force Camouflage and Markings World War II" from the same author and also published by Aero Publishers, it is still one one the standard references about this subject.

Vital reference on WW2 Japanese Army aircraft camouflage

Donald Thorpe's two books on WW2 Imperial Japanese aircraft camouflage(Army and Navy) are absolutely required for anyone wanting to build model airplanes or just research the colors and patterns used by them. This review will concern itself with the volume on the Japanese Army Air Force camouflage and markings. As mentioned, this book is invaluable when researching a pattern and/or the markings of a particular aircraft. The book is organized so that one can find the specific information(unit, unit markings, camo. patterns, etc.) that you need. Mr. Thorpe includes an organizational chart of the Japanese Army AF from squardron on up. A printed sheet of the paint colors used is included. While the printing process does result in inaccurate colors; it does give you an idea of the relative shade of the paint. Mr. Thorpe has also organized and listed all the patterns used; and in what part of the Pacific theatre they were likely to be used and when they appeared as well. All the wings, squadrons, and other units created by the Imp. Jap. AF are also listed, with the unit markings shown and what colors were used to paint them. Mr. Thorpe also mentions the interior colors and what ordnance(bombs, etc.) paint colors he was able to discover. To sum up: If you build WW2 Japanese aircraft; this book is vital to producing an accurate and realistic finish. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Pioneering Guide to JAAF Camouflage and Markings!

When Donald Thorpe's JAPANESE ARMY AIR FORCE CAMOUFLAGE AND MARKINGS WORLD WAR II was published in 1968, it became the standard reference on the subject. "Way back then" there wasn't a lot of information or photos or color profiles available on the JAAF. Thorpe's book, which provided a wealth of information on aircraft schemes and markings, was a revelation - and godsend - to those of us interested in the warbirds flown by JAAF aircrews. Though somewhat dated, it remains a wonderful and valuable guide.
Thorpe's book impresses immediately with a wonderful cover by Jack Leynnwood depicting a colorfully-marked Ki-84 escorting an equally attractive Ki-21 Sally. The text is divided into chapters on general camouflage and markings, general markings, unit markings, aircraft in profile, JAAF aircraft and various appendices. Included in those sections is information on the five basic JAAF camouflage schemes, interior/exterior colors, operational markings, kill markings, surrender aircraft, Sentai i.d. markings, Home Defense markings, principal JAAF units, Command stripes and so on.
The book's biggest selling point is the wealth of photographs, diagrams, side-views, scrap views, color chip charts and 20 pages of color profiles and rudder markings of Nates, Tojos, Tonys, Ki-100s, Marys, Randys, Lilys, Nicks, Franks, Sallys, Oscars, etc. Back in '68, Thorpe's book was a real treasure trove!
Nowadays, with the Osprey line and books by various authors, the JAAAF enthusiast has much material to choose from. Thorpe led the way and, if his book is a bit dated, it still remains an extremely useful guide to JAAF markings and camouflage. Highly recommended.
