Corn Palaces and Butter Queens: A History of Crop Art and Dairy Sculpture, by Pamela H. Simpson

Teddy Roosevelt’s head sculpted from butter. The Liberty Bell replicated in oranges. The Sioux City Corn Palace of 1891 encased with corn, grains, and grasses and stretching for two city blocks—with a trolley line running down its center. Between 1870 and 1930, from county and state fairs to the world’s fairs, large exhibition buildings were covered with grains, fruits, and vegetables to declare in no uncertain terms the rich agricultural abundance of the United States. At the same fairs—but on a more intimate level—ice-cooled cases enticed fairgoers to marvel at an array of butter sculpture models including cows, buildings, flowers, and politicians, all proclaiming the rich bounty and unending promise held by the region.

Often viewed as mere humorous novelties—fun and folksy, but not worthy of serious consideration—these lively forms of American art are described by Pamela H. Simpson in a fascinating and comprehensive history. From the pioneering cereal architecture of Henry Worrall at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition to the vast corn palaces displayed in Sioux City, Iowa, and elsewhere between 1877 and 1891, Simpson brings to life these dazzling large-scale displays in turn-of-the-century American fairs and festivals. She guides readers through the fascinating forms of crop art and butter sculpture, as they grew from state and regional fairs to a significant place at the major international exhibitions. The Minnesota State Fair’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way contest, Lillian Colton’s famed pictorial seed art, and the work of Iowa’s “butter cow lady,” Norma “Duffy” Lyon, are modern versions of this tradition.

Beautifully illustrated with a bounty of never-before-seen archival images, Corn Palaces and Butter Queens is an accessible history of one of America’s most unique and beguiling Midwestern art forms—an amusing and peculiar phenomenon that profoundly affected the way Americans saw themselves and their country’s potential during times of drought and great depression.

Review

"Fortunate visitors to State Fairs in New York, Minnesota, Iowa and elsewhere never fail to make a pilgrimage to the butter sculptures: the cows, the dairy princesses, the famous athletes, and the rural scenes all rendered in pure, edible, spreadable gold. The spectators point, giggle, and marvel. Pamela H. Simpson does more in this dazzling study of foodstuff display, its history, and meaning. Butter effigies, ‘palaces’ covered in corn or potatoes, maidens made of wheat, and historic fortresses duplicated in apples speak to westward expansion, the birth of visual advertising, our American obsession with scale, and the culture of overabundance, as well as the pride and hopes of the farm. This is the very stuff of history in the making, a series of inventive recipes for national grandeur." —Karal Ann Marling, author of Designs on the Heart: The Homemade Art of Grandma Moses

"Corn Palaces and Butter Queens will be THE book to fully document this sometimes odd but fascinating area of American cultural history, particularly important in the Midwest and Plains as the bread basket of the nation and world." —Colleen Sheehy, author of Seed Queen: The Story of Crop Art and the Amazing Lillian Colton

Landscape of Discontent: Urban Sustainability in Immigrant Paris (A Quadrant Book), by Andrew Newman

On a rainy day in May 2007, the mayor of Paris inaugurated the Jardins d’Éole, a park whose completion was hailed internationally as an exemplar of sustainable urbanism. The park was the result of a hard-fought, decadelong protest movement in a low-income Maghrebi and African immigrant district starved for infrastructure, but the Mayor’s vision of urban sustainability was met with jeers.

Drawing extensively from immersive, firsthand ethnographic research with northeast Paris residents, as well as an analysis of green architecture and urban design, Andrew Newman argues that environmental politics must be separated from the construct of urban sustainability, which has been appropriated by forces of redevelopment and gentrification in Paris and beyond. France’s turbulent political environment also provides Newman with powerful new insights into the ways in which multiethnic coalitions can emerge⎯even amid overt racism and Islamophobia⎯in the struggle for more just cities and more inclusive societies.

A tale of multidimensional political efforts, Landscape of Discontent cuts through the rhetoric of green cities to reveal the promise that environmentalism holds for urban communities anywhere.

Review

"From Haussmann to Charlie Hebdo, Paris has always demanded our attention. Efforts to vigilantly reimagine the city and its inhabitants remain one of the most important tasks in this urban century, and Andrew Newman’s Landscape of Discontent provides masterful insights into what urban nature has been and can be."—Nik Heynen, University of Georgia

"Andrew Newman has crafted a dynamic account of how local residents and activists can transform a social and physical urban environment by drawing in the very political forces—including city planners—that imagine themselves as the true shapers of that reality."—Michael Herzfeld, Harvard University

"This is a fantastic book that should be required reading for anyone invested in debates on the right to the city, urban political ecology, and the cultural politics of belonging in contemporary France. "—Antipode

"An important contribution to a small, but growing body of Anglophone literature on housing and the built environment in late twentieth-century France."—H-France Review

Dubai, the City as Corporation, by Ahmed Kanna

Somewhere in the course of the late twentieth century, Dubai became more than itself. The city was, suddenly, a postmodern urban spectacle rising from the desert—precisely the glittering global consumer utopia imagined by Dubai’s rulers and merchant elite. In Dubai, the City as Corporation, Ahmed Kanna looks behind this seductive vision to reveal the role of cultural and political forces in shaping both the image and the reality of Dubai.
Exposing local struggles over power and meaning in the making and representation of Dubai, Kanna examines the core questions of what gets built and for whom. His work, unique in its view of the interconnectedness of cultural identity, the built environment, and politics, offers an instructive picture of how different factions—from local and non-Arab residents and expatriate South Asians to the cultural and economic elites of the city—have all participated in the creation and marketing of Dubai. The result is an unparalleled account of the ways in which the built environment shapes and is shaped by the experience of globalization and neoliberalism in a diverse, multinational city.

Review

"Dubai, the City as Corporation is a thoughtful, in-depth treatment on Dubai and its recent explosive economic growth, grounded in the urban studies/spatial theory of Henri Lefebvre. Engaging and persuasive, it knits together anthropology and urban design, giving a balanced assessment of Dubai’s reinvention as a city, a global commerce center, and an experiment in urban planning." —Timothy Luke, Virginia Tech

Illuminating
By Amazon Customer
Every now and again you come across a book that you can only describe as liberating, because it is able to shed light on some crucial problem in your lived experience the reasons for which you were somehow blind to or were unable to adequately recognize. Having lived several years in Dubai and elsewhere in the Gulf, this is one book that I'm especially grateful for. Kanna's study provides an insightful analysis and critique of new forms of structural oppression that emerge from the collusion of neoliberalism and local politics. The book highlights the (at times unwitting) role of new global elites, such as starchitects, in this process. And it also says a good deal about why those of us who live in this part of the world for generations--whether "local" or "expat"--remain blind to the factors that render invisible the causes of the various forms of systemic inequality we experience here.

So difficult to read
By Van Essa
This book is an obvious work of consequence. However, the author is so wrapped up in sounding intelligent(which he no-doubt is) and schlorly, his message gets muddled. Just because a book is "easy" to understand does not mean its message is simple.

I read this book and it shows that not only humans but animals can be HEROES, too. Just as well, it shows that animals also can save lives if not do a greater deed in your lifetime. This was my favorite book. The favorite chapter in my opinion was the courageous cat that fought off a deadly intruder.

Excellent Stories but Questions Hold
By Gideon McInnes
I have had this book for many years, and the stories in it are the definition of "short sweet and too the point", making it a very good read for those in it's target demographic, the only thing holding me back from a 5 rating is the title, "True Tales" I ran a search on several of the stories looking for some supplemental information but was unable to find any news reports or confirmation of these stories happening, Unless someone could bring forward evidence to the contrary I would be hesitant to list this as Nonfiction. Accuracy notwithstanding this is still a very good read.

Minnesota Railroads: A Photographic History, 1940-2012, by Steve Glischinski

“The Great Northern Railway, in the eventful year of 1941, met every requirement made of it as the Nation hurriedly prepared for war.” So Great Northern’s president spoke of the Minnesota railroad that transported the tanks and airplanes, materiel and troops, that were critical to America’s military success. This illustrated volume offers an enlightening—and irresistibly entertaining—look at Minnesota railroads from that shining moment, near the end of the romantic era of steam locomotives and luxury passenger lines, to the reemergence of railroads as one of the few profitable transportation industries in our day.

Remarkable photographs, many never before published, take us inside the cab of a monumental steam locomotive, which hauled iron ore from the Mesabi Range, and into the lounge car of the luxurious North Coast Limited streamliner. We visit the huge shops that worked on massive locomotives and go trackside to witness the morning rush hour at the St. Paul Union Depot. From the modest St. Charles depot welcoming the Rochester 400 in 1962 to brand-new locomotives speeding container trains west at Hawley in 2009, Minnesota Railroads combines thrilling close-ups and an edifying long view, fine details and a full history.

Traveling from Winton to Worthington, Noyes to Winona, tracking the transition from steam to diesel and the mergers that created today’s mega railroads, Minnesota Railroads gives readers a richly textured picture of railroading’s past and future and its impact on life in Minnesota.

Nice variety of photographs of Minnesota railroads.
By Bill Hough
Steve Glischinski is a well-known railroad author, whose work includes Burlington Northern and Its Heritage, 1970-1991: A 21-year Salute and the MBI volume on the Santa Fe Railway. Additionally, his byline is well known to readers of Trains or Railfan & Railroad magazines. Now Mr. Glischinski teams up with the University of Minnesota Press to deliver Minnesota Railroads: A Photographic History, 1940-2012, a 296 page hardcover book with 368 color photographs covering the diverse rail operations in the Minnesota.

The book is attractively laid out in a 11'' x 10'' "album-style" format. Glischinski opens with a one-introduction to railroad terminology, which helps to make this book accessible to the general public. Next, the acknowledgements let readers know that Glischinski had access to many noteworthy photo collections and a three page introduction discusses both the author's development as a photographer and industry trends in the period covered by this book.

After the introduction, the main portion of the book is divided into four chapters, three of which cover 20-year periods. The final chapter covers the beginning of the 21st Century and is followed by lists of Minnesota railroads in 1940 and 2012, endnotes, bibliography and an index. Each chapter begins with a narrative overview of the subject time period. The overall "story arc" will be familiar to students of railroading: gradual decline followed by post-Staggers revival. Each chapter contains photos from around Minnesota that illustrate each period.

The first two chapters, "An Industry in Transition: 1940-1960" and The Struggle for Survival: 1960-1980" cover slightly more than two-thirds of the book, which is not surprising given the author writes that "(T)his book began as a way to show off the many photographs in the files of the Minnesota Historical Society that contain railroad subjects." The Minneapolis Star Tribune, several museums and numerous individuals, including well-known writer and photographer William D. Middleton, also contributed photos. Glischinski, who began his photography in the 1970s, also contributes. The book's photo selection reflects the many contributors and collections cited in the acknowledgements.

The third chapter, "Revival and Rehabilitation: 1980-2000," reviews the Staggers Act of 1980 which reversed the declines discussed in the first two chapters. Glischinski sums it up on page 204: "There were fewer miles of track, but those that remained were well maintained and carried more traffic." For example, we read that Burlington Northern abandoned approximately 649 miles of track in Minnesota during the 1990s. Other railroads, like Chicago Rock Island & Pacific, shut down completely. Some lines were transferred to short lines and regional railroads, and the industry became "leaner and meaner," a trend that is brought up-to-date in chapter 4.

A photo book is defined by the selection of images, and that is where the book excels. Photos show an excellent cross section of Minnesota railroad history, including freight and passenger trains, stations, towers, bridges, preserved steam and taconite trains on the famous Iron Range. For example, the Erie Mining/LTV operation Hoyt Lakes to Taconite Harbor is well known, but photos of that line's F9s in the original blue and silver paint scheme, quite rare, appear on page 66. Also, the sad demise of the privately-operated passenger train and the demise of landmark stations in Minneapolis is partially offset by the news that passenger trains will soon return to Saint Paul Union Depot. There is a good selection of steam locomotives in the book, from the classic DM&IR 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstones" to former SP 4-8-4 4449 and UP 4-6-6-4. Fan trip favorite Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad 4-8-4 261 appears both in regular service and after restoration. Several images remind us that Minnesota endures nasty winters, including a North Shore Mining taconite train, where the blue locomotives stand out from the winter wonderland background.

I only have one minor criticism to offer, and that refers to caption information. A good caption, such as the one on page 266, explains the type of locomotive in the photograph, in this case a General Electric AC4400CW. However, the caption for the photograph on page 269 refers to, in part; Twin Cities & Western Railroad's "newer fleet of locomotives," without telling the reader exactly what type of locomotives is pictured. This reviewer would have preferred to see locomotive types identified in more of the "train picture" captions. But such quibbles aside, this book will should appeal to anyone who appreciates good railroad photography. The reader unfamiliar with the North Star State will quickly discover interesting railroading.

Love This Book!
By Madonna Hauge
I purchased this book for my husband for his birthday in February 2013. We have a cabin in Northern Minnesota (Aitkin) and my husband belongs to the Crosslake Train Club in Crosslake, MN. I got news of this book because some of the club members wrote in an email that they saw the author and heard him speak of his book. My husband and I live in Iowa, and he has a model train collectiion, and he loves Minnesota Railroad history. He even has built some old MN train stations for his train collection. He was thrilled to get this gift!

Everything You Know about Indians Is Wrong (Indigenous Americas Series), by Paul Chaat Smith

In this sweeping work of memoir and commentary, leading cultural critic Paul Chaat Smith illustrates with dry wit and brutal honesty the contradictions of life in “the Indian business.”

Raised in suburban Maryland and Oklahoma, Smith dove head first into the political radicalism of the 1970s, working with the American Indian Movement until it dissolved into dysfunction and infighting. Afterward he lived in New York, the city of choice for political exiles, and eventually arrived in Washington, D.C., at the newly minted National Museum of the American Indian (“a bad idea whose time has come”) as a curator. In his journey from fighting activist to federal employee, Smith tells us he has discovered at least two things: there is no one true representation of the American Indian experience, and even the best of intentions sometimes ends in catastrophe. Everything You Know about Indians Is Wrong is a highly entertaining and, at times, searing critique of the deeply disputed role of American Indians in the United States. In “A Place Called Irony,” Smith whizzes through his early life, showing us the ironic pop culture signposts that marked this Native American’s coming of age in suburbia: “We would order Chinese food and slap a favorite video into the machine—the Grammy Awards or a Reagan press conference—and argue about Cyndi Lauper or who should coach the Knicks.” In “Lost in Translation,” Smith explores why American Indians are so often misunderstood and misrepresented in today’s media: “We’re lousy television.” In “Every Picture Tells a Story,” Smith remembers his Comanche grandfather as he muses on the images of American Indians as “a half-remembered presence, both comforting and dangerous, lurking just below the surface.”

Smith walks this tightrope between comforting and dangerous, offering unrepentant skepticism and, ultimately, empathy. “This book is called Everything You Know about Indians Is Wrong, but it’s a book title, folks, not to be taken literally. Of course I don’t mean everything, just most things. And ‘you’ really means we, as in all of us.”

From Publishers Weekly
In this acerbic collection of essays, Comanche cultural critic and art curator Smith (Like a Hurricane) riffs on the romantic stereotypes of Indian as spiritual masters and first environmentalists, as tragic victims of technology and civilization, as primal beings brimming with nomad authenticity, their every artifact a gem of folk art. Such tropes, he complains, hide the riotous complexity of the modern Indian experience, which he visits in pieces that explore his grandfather's Christian church, Sitting Bull's savvy manipulation of his media image (he had an agent) and the author's own Comanche forebears, who were both world-class barbarians and avid adopters of the white man's gadgetry. These loose-limbed essays range all over the landscape, from Hollywood westerns to the 1973 siege of Wounded Knee to (somewhat obscurely) the contemporary Indian art scene. Smith doesn't entirely square his view of Indians as just plain folks with his advancing of a unique Indian cultural perspective, but his keen, skeptical eye makes such ironies both amusing and enlightening. Review
Smith's recognition of the contradictions within his own life inspires his readers to resist adherence to categories that may seem comforting but actually limit personal growth.  --NeoAmericanist (added by author)

In this rigorously insightful collection of essays written between 1992 to 2008, Smith, a wry, sharp-edged cultural critic, and associate curator for the NMAI, addresses the myriad ironic complexities of American Indian reality. --Washington Post (added by author)

Personal and quirky
By Ursiform
Paul Chaat Smith is an associate curator at the National Museum of the American Indian, an institution he once described as "a bad idea whose time has come". That line alone should give warning about the unvarnished opinions he offers in this book of essays, grouped to offer a flow of sorts.

In the earlier parts of the book he discusses how the idea of "Indians" didn't exist until the Europeans arrived. Before that time the Americas was divided up between nations, much as Europe was. There were conflicts between nations, and boundaries changed with time, but that also happened in Europe. It was the Europeans who imposed the idea that all natives were one group of primitive people divided into "tribes", rather than a kaleidoscope of cultures similar to the situation in Europe.

[Note: For an outstanding book on what the Americas were really like before the landing of Columbus, and how the nations of the new world fell, see "1491" by Charles C. Mann, an outstanding book.]

He continues on to explain, often quite amusingly, how movies and other media formed a popular but inaccurate image of native people. (Crazy Horse was nicknamed "Curly" as a kid?!)

Next Smith talks about his involvement with the American Indian Movement. For those who lived through the era, it provides another viewpoint. (A dysfunctional take, by the way.) For younger readers it can serve a brief primer on ancient history.

Then he move into contemporary Indian art. I'll just say I have different tastes than the author, especially regarding performance art.

In the end he returns to the dichotomy between how Indians are viewed and how they really live.

There are parts of this book I really enjoyed, and parts where I disagreed with the author. But it's a short book, and a personal one, and his voice deserves to be heard. If the subject interests you, go ahead and read it. Even when you disagree you'll be forced to think.

Gritty, authentic, edgy and no-holds-barred Indigenous read.
By Joyce Godwin Grubbs
The most outstanding book I have read on Indians (Indigenous Americans) and one of the best I have read of Paul Chaat Smith. The book is authentic, edgy, no-holds-barred. It is what all Americans need to read to get to the crux of all that is the Indian struggle and the Indian successes. This is an inspiration to the Indians, and to the readers who seek to truly understand the culture that is North American Indigenous.
